The man "So you want to know
about whers?" Lucien asked, Whermaster of Pern. "What do you want to know?"
Yallina shifted from where she was sitting on her feet. She needed to
know everything she could if she was going to be a Whermaster herself
one day. "What's the different types of Whers? I know they say that
there's Besar and Tidak," she commented, stumbling over the names a
bit, "but aren't they the same? Why use two names?"
Lucien smiled. He got that question a lot. "Well you see, Tidak
Whers are the former Watch Whers, they are blind in the daylight and
can only function is dark places. They are also lacking in
intelligence. But they are fiercely loyal and never disobey. Besar
Whers are those that are taken from the wild. Their vison shifts,
from daytime to night. The only times they are blind are dusk and
dawn. Their eyes cannot adjust in these twilight times. They are
however very intelligent, and are smart enough to question what tasks
they have been given. They often need treats and if treated badly
will turn on their masters. Depending on what you are looking for in
a Wher; each haqs its uses. Also Besar tend to be less bulky then
Tidak.
Yallina shifted slightly from her seat. "Which ones do you train? Is
one more fun to train than the other?"
Lucien jerked a thumb over his shoulder towards his slumbering gold
beast. "I train Besar Whers, for the simple fact that they need more
attention in training. A Tidak doesn't need much training since they
are always happy to do what their handlers ask. They only need to be
shown what to do. Besar have minds of their own and have to be
trained to behave from when they are very young. That is why any one
that gets a Besar Wher egg has to stay at Wherhold for a Turn to learn
how to control their beasts. As for which is more fun, I personally
like the Besar Whers."
Yallina pondered over that a moment. "You said the Besar were less
bulky than the Tidak. Is that the only difference in how they look?
Or do they have different coloring, or something like that?"
Lucien thought for a moment. "Tidaks are also more brightly colored,
while Besar have hues that blend in more. Besar were wild once, and a
pack of Wild Cats could take one down, so they had to adapt to hide
from predators. Besides that, Tidak Whers tend to have more design to
their hides. Some handlers bred specifically for unique hides." He
waited, and smiled to Yallina. "Is there anything else you'd like to
know?"
