Chapter 1: A Lonely Friend and her Guardian
?No!!? screamed a voice late into the night. A girl in a low tree branch shot up and looked around frantically, trying to see who was screaming. She slowly came to realized it was her. She sighed and looked down at the base of the old tree. Near the little dying fire laid an even younger girl. She studied the sleeping girl; she was a bushy tailed cat demon. The cat was curled up with her tail pulled over her nose. The older girl stood up and jumped down next to the sleeping one.
?Ling-nai? she shouted. ?Ling-nai, wake up.? Ling-nai didn?t move. The girl sighed and noticed day-break, and Ling-nai needed to wake up. She shouted again, still nothing. Then she noticed that Ling-nai?s ears were laid back so she couldn?t hear. She picked up a stick and poked Ling-nai with it. Ling-nai sleepy looked up.
?What?? She yawned.
?It?s dawn, we should go now? said the girl.
?Why so early Cole?? asked Ling-nai.
?So we can get a good and early start? replied Niacole. Ling-nai sighed, she stood up and stretched, she let out a yawn that ended in a purr.
?Fine, fine? she replied. Niacole put out the fire and readied the horse.
?Come on Ling-nai? said Niacole with an impatient tone. Ling-nai walked over to the horse and Niacole helped her up. Ling-nai fixed herself upon the horse named Shwe. Niacole lead the horse out of the small, wooded clearing.
Ling-nai is 16 years old; she was semi-tall for her age. She had long, slivery, uneven hair with pale blue highlights. She had sparkling, cat-like golden eyes. She always wore the finest silk; she was very high class among her demon kind. Demons were regular creatures, like the elves and humans, but they mostly love blood shed. Some, like Ling-nai like peace instead of violence, but there is so few. Everyone in the northern lands respected her but others wanted to kill her. Ling-nai had a base line of a human girl but had the fine features of a cat; they included car-like ears, a long bushy tail, claws, fangs, and cat-like instinct. She was also immortal, meaning only she was to live longer maybe 10,000-100,000 years at the most and could heal a lot faster. There are two types of immortals, those that resemble animals, demons, and those that are elves, which live much longer and have many different kinds.
Niacole was 18, and also semi-tall. She has straight, raven black hair, and bright green eyes. Niacole was in a class of her own; she never took any crap from anyone and always spoke her mind. She wore many different outfits, leather, cloth, even silk, but mostly elfish clothing. She was human or looked like it. Both Niacole and Ling-nai are orphans, so it was hard to tell. With Ling-nai it was simple, but Niacole looked human, but no one was sure. Even though she was she never acted like it, she wasn?t afraid of death.
?Are we going to eat breakfast?? asked Ling-nai.
?No.? replied Niacole.
?Why??? complained Ling-nai.
?Ling-nai, we just ate breakfast last night, you are a demon, and I think you can hold out a few more hours.?
?But?. Bu?.b?.?
?NO! Just wait awhile? Niacole said firmly. Ling-nai nodded and sat quietly on the horse. After awhile Ling-nai asked another question.
?Niacole, don?t you ever get tried of this?
?Of what?? asked Niacole in annoyance.
?This, always protecting me; guarding me.? Said Ling-nai.
?Isn?t that what a guardian does?? Niacole asked questionably.
?Yes but, don?t you ever want to stop and get married? Have kids and build a house. You know, have a family?? Niacole didn?t answer. ?Well do you???
?I pledged my life to you and not myself.? Niacole said softly.
?Just answer.? Pleaded Ling-nai.
?No, I don?t want any of that.?
?Why??
?I just don?t okay? said Niacole sharply.
?Kay? said Ling-nai quietly, she knew better than to make Niacole mad, which was very easy to do. They traveled in silence. A great time had passed when Ling-nai broke the silence.
?Where are we going to again?? Niacole sighed.
?To my grandmother?s.? answered Niacole.
?Where is that again??
?In the city of Meiho? replied Niacole.
?Meiho? Isn?t that the elfin city? I thought you were human.? Said Ling-nai in confusion.
?It is, and I am human. The woman who adopted me was half-elvin and she was married to a human man.?
?Why aren?t you with your parents now??
?My mother is dead and I don?t care about her husband.? said Niacole. Ling-nai stayed quiet the rest of the way. They arrived in Meiho, they didn?t stop all day. The horse was panting and Ling-nai?s stomach was growling. Meiho was a very beautiful city. It was located in the thickest part of the forest. No one was allowed in Meiho unless they were elves, and so no one could find it easily the city was built in the trees. Spiral staircases were built around the huge trunks and the thick branches were carved into bridges. The trunks where partly carved out so houses could be built. Some houses were located on the ground, concealed by water falls and hidden paths. Stone steps that led to exploration.
Near the top of the city was a huge house, almost like a mansion. The corners built into the trees and balconies hovering over the city. This is where in elfin queen, Nanayo, lived. Meiho was truly a city of royalty.
