FATAL FRAME

The Fatal Frame Series actually has its beginnings in one of Tecmo's other game series called Kagero (Deception & Trapt in the US). While working on that series, Keisuke Kikuchi toyed with the idea of a player having to travel through a spooky haunted house. Thus, the idea for Fatal Frame was born. What many fans may not know, is that Kikuchi-san originally took the idea for the game to Capcom. Capcom at the time was already very deep in the survival horror gaming genre, with its clocktower & resident evil series. However, Capcom took one look at the game and turned it down. Kikuchi-san then took the game idea and plugged it to Tecmo, who welcomed the storyline and unique fighting style with open arms. Hence the Zero/Fatal Frame series was born. Zero ~zero~ ie the first Fatal Frame game, came out in Japan in 2001, and was released in the US in 2002.

The world of Fatal Frame usually takes place in a rumoured to be haunted location. The main character (usually female) who has a slight sixth sense finds an antique camera with the ability to 'battle' ghosts. As our protagonist makes her way through the game looking for their lost sibling, she finds information and backstory about an ancient ritual that took place (and went horribly wrong). In the end, it is up to the protagonist to find their lost sibling or loved one, solve the mystery of the ritual, and if she's lucky enough, make it out alive. In the first Fatal Frame game, our heroine is Miku, in search of her brother in the Himuro Mansion, a haunted house which was witness to a horrific massacre. In Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly, our heroine is Mio, who has become trapped with her twin sister Mayu in the Lost Village, a haunted village in the forest with no way of escape. In Fatal Frame III: The Tormented, our heroes are Miku Hinasaki, Kei Amakura, and Rei Kurosawa, each of them falling under a mysterious curse that is slowly turning their nightmares into reality.

The 'True' stories Fatal Frame I: Based on two Japanese urban legends which have nothing to do with secret shinto rituals of maidens being ripped apart by ropes. (Please check out for himuro mansion section for more info)

Fatal Frame II: Based on detective stories by Seishi Yokomizo, eastern & western horror movies, and arguably (my opinion, not confirmed) the real life event of the Three Gorges Dam being built in China.

What Keisuke Kikuchi, director of Fatal Frame II specifically said about Fatal Frame II when asked about it's 'mythology' "We've taken inspiration from a lot of sources -- horror movies, both Japanese and Western, novels, and so on. Also, actual events, disasters, things like that, and legends and traditions. We've taken the essence of many different sources and put them together. It's not like we found the story and said "here's what we're going to put in the game." What makes the story scary, we've mixed together from many different sources. "

Fatal Frame III: Based on horror movies, urban legends, and specifically some of the spiritual encounters & dreams of Makoto Shibata the series producer.

Regardless of whether or not you believe there is a Himuro Mansion somewhere in Japan, believe in ghosts, or just like playing video games in the dark, Fatal Frame seems to have something for just about every type of fan. And here's hoping this is a series that keeps on kicking! .

FATAL FRAME Nine days have passed since Mafuyu, brother of Miku Hinasaki, had disappeared.

It all began about a month ago.

The media reported that the famous novelist Junsei Takamine disappeared while gathering research for an upcoming novel. Mafuyu, an aspiring journalist, suspected that something was wrong. Why would his mentor simply vanish into thin air? Mafuyu decided to conduct a private search for his friend, with the investigation eventually leading to the grounds of a secluded mansion. The Himuro mansion stands silent and imposing deep within the forest. It's said that years ago the mansion belonged to a powerful landowner who had absolute control over the area. But now it's a shadow of its former self, dilapidated and desolate...

As Mafuyu searched the mansion, he found scraps of paper left by Junsei and his staff throughout the mansion. The writings recounted a number of ominous events that happened in the mansion's dark past. Eager to find additional clues within the mansion, Mafuyu rushed in and suddenly realized that he wasn't alone...

This thought has haunted Rei ever since that day... The day she lost her fiance in a car accident - while she was at the wheel.

FATAL FRAME 4:Even though Fatal Frame III: The Tormented hasn't hit stores in the US or Europe yet, already there seem to be mumurs of a fourth game in the works. However, with those murmurs are included a more grim and negative side, that Fatal Frame III may in fact be the last game of the series.

Fans are obviously split on the issue. There are those who love the series, and want it to stay alive as one of the major three horror series. (Resident Evil and Silent Hill) Other fans point out that even Resident Evil is starting to seem extremely overplayed with its vast amounts of sequels, which is starting to hurt the franchise. Silent Hill lovers point out that SH is also beginning to have this problem, due to the poor plotline of Silent Hill 3, or the frustrating new gameplay of Silent Hill 4. Since Fatal Frame 3 itself is experimenting on Silent Hill/Clocktower elements in its gameplay, some fans point out that the series itself should end on a high note.

And with murmurs and rumors, there is always confusion, so here is what has been said concerning the release of a fourth series game (or not) .

Fatal Frame: The Movie It all started in 2002, with a press release by Tecmo & Dreamworks, stating that Dreamworks had bought the rights to produce a fatal frame movie. In 2003, we had news that the movie would be 'fast tracked' with promises of production in 2004. (Fans assumed this would be EARLY 2004, and we'd get the movie in the fall.) However, we hadn't heard any news at E3 or TGS (the world's two largest game conventions) and everyone feared the movie had become lost. Over the past few years the Fatal Frame Movie has faded in an out of news. MoviesOnline was reporting tips that the movie may be out in November 2005 or 2006, but this tip seems to have been false.

Currently, the movie is still in its developement process to make it seem less like your typical asian horror movie.

The movie is to be liveaction and is supposedly based on the storyline of the first Fatal Frame. The following information is the most up to date information I have concerning the movie at the present time.
