Pirates and privateers have existed for many years but are most well known in Tudor times.

Pirates have always been around. Including in Roman times in fact Julius Caesar himself was ounce captured by pirates but his Senates gladly paid the ransom and that is why there are still pirates today.

 Tudor pirates are the most famous pirates because of Queen Elizabeth's privateers who would pillage Spanish ships in the name of England. One of which is Sir Francis Drake who was knighted for famously burning many Spanish ships and holding off the Spanish Armada for several years.
