Aikido

Aikido is "soft style" Japanese martial art that was founded by Morihei Uyeshiba in 1942, who had studied Daito-Ryu Aki-Jujitsu, Kenjutsu, Sojutsu and Yawara. Uyeshiba trained a number of students, many of whom created their own systems (over 14 sects in the early 1980s). The movements of Aikido emphasize a flowing flexibility and the maintenance of a stable balance. The aim of the Aikidoist is to be in control of one's mind and body and to possess a calm, alert posture at all times, using an opponent's energy against themselves. Aikido's techniques are essentially non-combative, emphasizing throwing and joint techniques instead of kicking or punching. The continuous and fluid motion which originates at the waist is like the performances of a dance - a graceful, spherical movement coordinated with the motion of the entire body.
