I download freeware games all the time, and have been for 3 years, but I got bored with the ones I had, so I started making some to satisfy me. Games aren't the only thing that is freeware out there. There are tons of freeware programs, like applications, system utilities, wordprocessers, Internet browsers, etc. If the program exists, it's pretty hard to not find a freeware program like it.
