How To Remove Bad Frames In Avi's
You need two tools to do this, VirtualDub and
VirtualDub MP3-Freeze, you can get them here:
The advantage of VDubMP3 over VDub is that it can handle Variable Bit Rate avi's
whereas VDub cannot, to be honest I use VDub MP3 for virtually all my bad frames
removal and suggest you do the same. I'll refer to either one as VDub from now
on but I leave it to you to choose which one to use.
1: Open up VDub, go to File and select Open Video File. The avi file will now
load into VDub.
2: Go to Video and select Check Video For Freezes, this will start VDub checking
the file frame by frame for any errors that might cause skipping etc.
3: Once the scan is complete a box will pop up informing you that either bad
frames have been found or they haven't. If they haven't, congratulations you
have finished this tutorial your file is perfect. If they have go to step 4.
4: VDub has now logged a text file of the bad frames found, by default it is
automatically stored on your C:\ drive by VDub. Go and open it up.
5: Now you can see the bad frames listed by their number, they will normally
come in batches if there is more than 1 segment of bad frames. Highlight the
bottom most frame number on the list and copy it.
6: Now back to VDub and select Edit and then Go To.
7: In the Jump to Frame box paste the frame number you have just copied into
Jump To Frame Number and click OK.
8: Your screen should now look like this:
You will now have gone directly to the relevant frame. This is the last bad
frame in the segment so you need to move 1 along to find the last good frame. Do
this by clicking on
and then
on
to set it. Now go back
to the text log and highlight the last number in that segment, paste into Jump
By Frame and click OK as you did before. Now you are at the first frame of that
bad frame segment, this time you need to click
to get to the good frame and
to set it. You have now
selected the whole of one section of bad frames. Go to Edit and select Delete.
VDub will now cut out this segment, repeat steps 4 to 9 until you have removed
all the bad frames.
9: You should now have a bad frame free copy of the film in VDub, what you need
to do now is save it. Go to Video and select Direct Stream Copy.
10: Now go to Audio and select Direct Stream Copy.
11: Now go to File and select Save AVI. VDub will ask you where to save it, call
it "moviename checked" to avoid confusion later.
12: Vdub will now go through the motions and save your crystal clear bad frame
free movie file.
Congratulations that's it !
