The Borg's history is an interesting one. Originally from a planet rich in energy sources orbiting an unusually powerful star they developed into bipedal humanoids just after the first animals crawled onto land on earth. They quickly developed a knack for making and using tools of all sorts and descriptions. A persons importance in life became determined by the amount of tools they could make, explain or handle. The entire civilisation became centred on tools and their uses. This caused the Borg to unusually quickly develop into an industrial society. Their medical capabilities developed at an astonishing rate, as did propulsion and metallurgical knowledge.

Before long, the Borg numbered in the billions, were a highly organized and structured society. Computation propelled the Borg into space and their medical technology allowed the first bionic implants. At first reserved for test subjects, later becoming available to heads of state and eventually becoming commonplace, to the point where a baby would be implanted with basic bionic components in utero, or just after being born. By this time the Borg had developed a near-religion based around the perfection of their tools and technology. At this point, implants were everywhere, people received a scan at birth to determine their strengths and weaknesses they would then receive implants appropriately, and live the most productive lives possible.

That was when the idea for a singular mind or existence was first sggested. A leading scientist had already experimented with a group of students and found that he could make them share their thoughts and ideas, communicate using complex subspace signals. Basically the group functioned as one, and were very proud to do so. It was seen as an idea for a greater good. Sevaral more experimental groups were set up, each one larger than the last. Later entire companies would make their workers as one, to improve their efficiency. Later babies were equipped with 'pre-emptive' communication technology, so that when they grew up and had to join a group, they were already hardwired to do so.

About half of the Borg (now exceeding 15 billion, with several 'grouped' colonies on moons and nearby planets) were now part of one or several groups, and some people were starting to notice a growing awareness that you sometimes seemed connected to people miles away, or could retrieve information not expected in thr group one was currently in. What in fact was occuring was that the highly organised transfer of information took on an intelligence of it's own, and started to search for information outside it's own group, thus connecting hundreds and thousands of other groups. When exactly the change occured is not certain but at some point the colllective conscious kicked in and the Borg were one. One mind sharing thoughts over lightyears. Unfortunately this did not end their quest for the perfect tool. It made them want it even more, and thus they set out to the stars in huge warpdriven ships, looking for new technology, other species and material to satisfy their hunger for expansion. Several starsystems from the borg homeworld they found their first interesting species, the Achterion, who had discovered transwarp, a technlogy unknown to the borg at that point. The Archterion became species 0002, a borg reference number, shared by all their minds. In order to best use species 0002's capabilities a nano-technology was used, this was injected into the host species, which then grew implants, instantly connecting the new subject to the borg hive-mind. The Archterion were the first race to be assimilated.
