Practical Guide to Worldbuilding

By Anton Hofstetter

Simply defined, worldbuilding is the art of creating a universe, an environment in which to tell your story. The world you create may be similar to the one we live in or vastly different, depending on the story you want to tell. Worldbuilding is at the heart of role playing games, movies, and fiction books and effective worldbuilding is essential for the audience to be immersed in your story.

So, just how does someone go about inventing a universe? First off, you have to be the type of person who pays close attention to the details. Worldbuilding is time and energy consuming, so if you can't see yourself hunched over a keyboard or a notepad at three-thirty in the morning, frantically scribbling down ideas as fast as they pour out of your head and liking it, this just isn't your color of chocobo. Try football or something.

Follow the links above to your topic of interest. For beginners, I suggest the basics first.
