The Un-official site of the New Castle County Crossing Guards.

Historical Overview

In the early 60's Private Schools used their highest grade graduating boys to cross the rest of the classes as soon as classes ended, while Public Schools utilized volunteers and some paid crossing guards.

The Crossing Guard Unit of New Castle County began in the late 1960's (1969). Crossings Guards from most private and public schools gradually came under County Control as the years followed.

Today the demands for Crossing Guards far exceed those which apply and stay.

The hours are short and the hours waiting to respond are long. This makes up for an unusual work day. The demands of cold weather, snow and working in the rain isn't enjoyable in itself. To top things off, it seems, few drivers are aware that a school zone with flashing lights really means 20 MPH, not the average 34-55 MPH that we experience.

The comfort in this job is that hundred of children cross dangerous intersections with safety each and every day and now for many of them in the summer months as well .

Within the last month the Guards negotiated their first Union Contract in their History. This is a first for New Castle County and the Crossing Guards Unit. Possibly, in the future, a Guard may rise up from our ranks and become a Lieutenant in charge.
