The Personal Plots measure one square foot (12 x 12) and are situated at Glencairn in the historic Highland County of Caithness - the Lybster area of Caithness, to be exact.
The famous Grey Cairns of Camster are but a short walk from our estate, and date back over 4,500 years. This is the oldest stone-age site in Britain, and the Cairn of Camster was used for centuriesas a burial chamber for the first Highland Clan Chiefs.
Many of the place names in Caithness bear witness to the influence of the Viking invasion of Britain, names such as Lybster, Scrabster, Camster, Keiss, Freswick and so on. The large number of sheltered and hidden bays along the coastline of Caithness lured the Vikings - many settlementswere built and used as staging posts for forays inland.
The man who signed the peace treaty acknowledging the independence of the United States was a Caithnessian. Richard Oswald from Dunnet made a fortune as an 18th century merchant in London,and acquired extensive estates in America and the West Indies through marriage. He became a diplomat and signed the treaty for Britain, the American signatory being the famous scientist/politician,Benjamin Franklin.
The Counties of Caithness and Sutherland suffered greatly during the Highland Clearances when, after the Rebellion of the Highland Clans in 1745 was crushed on Culloden Moor, the Highland Chiefscame to realise that they had little use for the formidable fighting qualities and the fierce Clanloyalties of the native Highlander. Once a Clan Chief counted his wealth in the number of broadsword-wielding Warriors he could command in battle, soon he was to count his wealth in the number of sheep he could graze in the now empty hills and glens. But these same Highlanders' qualities weremuch needed elsewhere. In America, Canada, Australia and the many other lands these fiercely proud and hard-working people were driven to.
Each Laird of Glencairn is helping to preserve areas of Land in the Scottish Highlands, areas that will be left in their Natural Sate for them, their successors, and the local wildlife to enjoy. This could well be our last chance to save some of the most beautiful Land in the U.K. (perhaps the World) for our future generations to enjoy.The Title Laird can be used by male or female. With each plot purchased the Laird receives a handsome Land Title Deed measuring 15 x 10 together with a map of Caithness, plan of site, Personal Plot Number and access instructions.
