CAPPLEMAN, Francis Edward (LT/X 29050A)
b. 1917, Filey d. Monday 14th February 1944 (aged
27)
A further fisherman to die in the
hostilities, Francis was Second Hand aboard the H.M.S. Mewstone, a large converted
trawler. Like his father, also Francis
Edward, and who also served as a Second Hand aboard the Bon Avenia in the Great War, Francis the
younger was sent to sea on minesweeping duties but unlike his father did not
return.
Another man whose boat simply
‘vanished’ somewhere in the North Sea it is still not known what happened the Mewstone or her
crew and it was left to Francis’ wife Elizabeth who lived in Garden Village,
Hull and his mother Annie to mourn the loss of a loved one with no idea as to
his actual fate.
