Holes

“I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” (Philippians 4:13)

In the 2003 movie Holes, Sigourney Weaver is a warden at a juvenile detention center who has her inmates dig large holes to look for a legendary hidden treasure. We may not dig holes to find buried treasure, but we can tear down our walls of problems by blasting holes through them and watch them fall like the Berlin Wall, or more recently, statues of Saddam. We’re running the race of life moving full speed ahead with God’s blessing chasing us and overtaking us. Then suddenly we hit the wall, a wall of sickness, addiction or financial lack, a wall of oppression, failure or marital problems.

Once we hit a wall like that, we’ll be tempted to quit and give up in defeat. But don’t do it, because God will enable and strengthen us to break through that wall and keep right on going one hole at a time. It won’t be easy, but we have to push on through the tough times if we’re ever going to have a breakthrough. Like a seasoned athlete who knows that the wall isn’t the end but a signal that he’s on the verge of a record-breaking breakthrough. If he’ll toughen up and push himself a little more, he’ll get a second wind. Suddenly, he’ll go faster, jump higher, and pump more iron than ever before and reach a level of excellence he couldn’t have reached any other way.

The Apostle Paul wrote the immortal words “I can do ALL things through Christ [the Anointed One and His Anointing] who strengthens me.” It is the anointing of God that will help us to do and endure, not some or even most, but ALL things. When we endure Affliction, when we feel like a Castaway, when we are Down and Out in Beverly Hills, when failure is staring us in the face, press into the Word of God like never before and dig out Scriptures that pertain to our situation.

The Bible is loaded, and more reloaded than The Matrix, with 32,000 promises from God to help us deal with The Facts of Life. We may meditate on a particular Bible verse for days and even weeks trying to get some revelation, seemingly without success. Then suddenly, like the dawn of the morning, light will come pouring in and we’ll see the way to a breakthrough.

All we have to do is punch one hole in that wall of problems, blast one hole in it with our faith and with the Word of God. Then keep banging away at that hole, don’t quit, and before long, the forces of God will come Shining Through, demolishing every obstacle in their path like a flood. Be patient because there is no such thing as a drivethrough breakthrough, and it only takes one breakthrough like that to make us into more than a conqueror over our problems. (Romans 8:37)
