The Client

“My little children, these things I write to you, so that you may not sin. And if anyone sins, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous.” (1 John 2:1)

In the 1994 movie The Client based on the John Grisham novel starring Tommy Lee Jones and Susan Sarandon, a street smart kid is the client who seeks the help or advocacy of a lawyer against the FBI, the U.S. Attorney and the mob because he knows too much about a mob hit. The good news is that we have ample spiritual representation as the client before God the ultimate Judge. We have an advocate or lawyer who is always available and is concerned about us. We have an advocate who knows all our secrets and lies and still pleads our case before God the Father.

Our advocate has the experience of countless cases and He’s never lost one. Our advocate loves us so much that He died in our place so that we might be spared the death penalty, and His Name is Jesus the Lord Advocate General of the Church. The U.S. military has Judge Advocate General or JAG from which the TV show is based, but we have Jesus. As Stephen was being stoned to death we see Jesus as an advocate standing at the right hand of God on behalf of His dying client in Acts 7:54-56.

In Hebrews 8:1 the Word of God further says, “We have such a High Priest, who is seated at the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens.” Jesus is normally seated on the throne at the right hand of God but with the death of Stephen He rises as an attorney to defend a client. We who are sinful and deserve the wages of sin which is death (Romans 3:23 and Romans 6:23) have in Jesus the atoning sacrifice for our sinfulness and wicked ways. Jesus is our continuing advocate with our Heavenly Father and through our advocate we have acceptance with God in the Supreme Court of heaven.

If we have stumbled, failed, backslidden, or sinned, then we need to remember that we are the client who have a supernatural advocate who loves us so much that He died for us on the cross. And not only will our advocate get us declared not guilty because He is much more powerful than JAG, He can also wipe our slate clean for the Bible in 1 John 1:9 says, “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”
