I signed up for a Sears credit card not knowing I was also signing up for their telemarketing list.
- January 2000: I went to Sears to purchase a pair of pants. Would you like to sign up for a Sears credit card? It takes a few minutes and you get $10.00 of your purchase right away!. I agreed. After all, ten bucks is ten bucks. A couple of minutes to fill out the application and I got a temporary card. The permanent card was mailed to my house shortly after.
- 7-March-2000: I get a telephone call from Sears about a credit card insurance plan. The plan pays your credit card bills in case of unemployment. If there is no outstanding balance there is no plan fee. I accept.
- 24-March-2000: received details of Sears credit insurance plan.
- 6-July-2000: Sears life insurance offer - no premiums for 60 days. I have insurance already. No, thank you.
- 10-August-2000: Sears auto club. No, thank you.
- 11-October-2000: accident insurance. I declined.
- 28-November-2000: group insurance offer. I declined.
- 17-April-2001: medical? insurance offer. I declined.
- 24-May-2001: insurance called. I was not home.
- 26-May-2001: Kevin from Sears insurance called at 10 a.m. Saturday MORNING! Declined.
- 30-August-2001: another call. Declined.
- 17-November-2001: a group life insurance offer. I told them I was going to cancel the card.
- 24-December-2001: want insurance? NO. THANKS. I don't use the card and am going to cancel it.
- 5-June-2002: group insurance offer. I asked Melanie to remove my name from the list.
- 3-September-2002: called during weekday. I'm not home.
- 7-September-2002: another Saturday morning call. I asked AGAIN to be removed from the list.
- 17-September 2002: cancelled Sears card.
This ends my Sears credit card experience.
My purpose is to inform you that accepting any insurance offers to "valued Sears credit card holders" may result in numerous telemarketing offers.
I think my mistake was in accepting the first offer. Had I NOT ACCEPTED that initial insurance plan, I probably would not have received subsequent offers. This is purely speculation of course.
The irony is that I used the card only once for that initial purchase. I returned the pants and I still had the $10.00 credit on the card when it was cancelled.
