September 2001

On September 8, 2001, Foote Field was officially opened. Guba and Patches, the mascots for the University of Alberta Golden Bears and Pandas were present. Youngsters were entertained by clowns and magicians, jumping and bungee running on air mattresses. The Edmonton Eskimo cheerleaders kicked things off.

The ceremony was simple with brief comments from guests including U of A president Rod Fraser, Edmonton mayor Bill Smith, Minister of Community Development Gene Zwozdesky, and Guest of Honor Eldon Foote wearing a FOOTE 1 football jersey.

After the ceremonial kickoff by Mr. Foote, the U of A Golden Bear football team took on the U of Regina Rams in front of packed stands. The defending conference champion Rams defeated the Bears 36 to 7, while the U of A soccer team played to a sparse crowd on the west field.

October 2001

October 1 was Golden Bears football team picture day. Football, field hockey and soccer practices and games take place regularly.

The installation of an additional set of bleachers that began in late September is almost complete. Some red (mondo?) surfacing material was put down on the sidelines in front of the main bleachers. [ photo 53 - 59 kb ]
