The Neolithic Cultures

Evidence of later cultures shows them to be mostly located in the river valleys of North China.  These cultures in China emerged in Neolithic (New Stone Age) times. Agriculture began, with the main cereal being millet.  Among the animals domesticated at this time were dogs, pigs, goats, sheep, cattle, and possibly horses.  Houses were provided with stoves and ovens.

There are remains of three-legged cooking vessels called li.  The li, three pots joined as a tripod, dates from the neolithic period.  It represents a great advance interms of using heat, as the hollow legs both provide support and present a greater surface to the fire, while the internal division allows the preparation of several things at once.
