Ornithomancy


Ornithomancy or Orniscopy is very closely allied with augury. By some definitions, the two terms are interchangeable, while others say is applies specifically to bird song and flight. It was a very popular form of divination in Greece and was adopted by the Romans who developed a preisthood dedicated to this form of divination.

A songbird singing or uttering a cry while in flight is a good omen A bird of prey or a dark plumed bird which does this, unless it happens to be near its nest, augurs misfortune.

Cuckoo

Hearing the first cuckoo of the year is a harbinger of good luck for the rest of the season. If you could not see the cuckoo, but heard its call on the right, it is an omen of incoming prosperity. If the bird is heard on the left, your good fortune is somewhat reduced.

Dove

If a dove is heard cooing in the woods, it is a warning against thieves. One seen or heard at the window is a death omen.

Duck

The quack of a duck is said to indicate prosperity.

Eagle

The cry of an eagle means bad luck.

Geese

The cackling of geese is regarded as a warning of the approach of some secret enemy. Anyone who hears them should exercise caution for a few days.

Owl

An owl's hoots indicate illness or death. To hear an owl hoot three times in succession is a sign of very bad luck, some even say the death of someone close-by. An owl hooting around houses is said to mean an unmarried woman lost her virginity. To kill an owl or any nightbird is also considered unlucky.

Robin

If a robin is heard singing in the bush, the weather will be foul, while if it is heard singing from the barn, warm weather is in store.

Raven

The sound of a caw indicates illness or death.

Rooster

If a rooster crowed at night, there will be betrayal among friends. Hearing a hen crow is a warning of personal illness. For a girl to hear the crowing of a rooster while thinking of her sweetheart is a lucky omen, but for the prospective bride or bridegroom a rooster crowing on their wedding-day is a portent of strife, bickering, and unhappiness.
