'CARRIE' & 'PHANTOM' AT MUSEUM OF MOVING IMAGE
PART OF SERIES "SEE IT BIG! JACK FISK" March 11 - April 1

The Museum Of The Moving Image begins a film series tonight titled, "See It Big! Jack Fisk." Fisk-designed sets will be all over the big screen in films such as Brian De Palma's Carrie, which screens Saturday March 12 at 4:30pm, sandwiched in between Fisk collaborations with Terrence Malick (To The Wonder) and David Lynch (Mulholland Drive). De Palma's Phantom Of The Paradise will screen at 7pm on Sunday, March 20, and then the following Saturday, March 26, features a film that Fisk also directed, Raggedy Man, starring his wife Sissy Spacek, at 4:30pm, followed by a can't-miss-if-you're-in-the-area double-feature that evening made up of Willard Huyck and Gloria Katz' Messiah Of Evil and William Witney's Darktown Strutters. Of Messiah Of Evil, the Museum Of The Moving Image description reads, "One of the great unsung horror movies of the 1970s, this trancelike, visually stunning creep-out stars Medium Cool’s Marianna Hill as a young woman searching for her missing father, getting deeper and deeper into the world of the occult. According to cult film expert Tim Lucas, Messiah of Evil features 'some of the most elegant cinematography and uncannily unnerving art direction ever afforded an American horror film.'” Of Darktown Strutters, the description reads, in part, "Gaudy, gritty, and fantastical, Darktown Strutters was one of the most eccentric productions designed by Jack Fisk during the wild first decade of his career." Film Comment's Margaret Barton-Fumo calls Darktown Strutters "a cartoonish film that proudly abandons any semblance of reality."

DE PALMA RETROSPECTIVE IN MADRID, MAY-JUNE
CINE DORE SERIES INCLUDES SEVERAL DE PALMA THRILLERS, PLUS 2 FROM HITCHCOCK

Brian De Palma will be the focus of a film series at Cine Doré in Madrid, Spain, beginning tonight (May 13) with a screening of a 35mm print of Hi, Mom!, followed by De Palma's Sisters, projected from DCP. The series features several De Palma films, as well as two Alfred Hitchcock works that heavily inspired De Palma: Psycho and Vertigo. Other De Palma films include Phantom Of The Paradise (35mm), Obsession (35mm), Dressed To Kill (DCP), Carrie (DCP), The Fury (Blu-ray), Blow Out (DCP), Scarface (DCP), Body Double (DCP), The Untouchables (35mm), Casualties Of War (35mm), Bonfire Of The Vanities, and more. Click here to read the full May schedule. According to MCU.es, the series will continue on in June, and all told will screen 21 feature films as part(s) of the series.

The Prince Charles Cinema in London will feature a Brian De Palma Selectrospective, with a De Palma film screening every Monday in March. The series kicks off March 2nd with Carrie, then Scarface (March 9), Dressed To Kill (March 16), The Untouchables (March 23), and Blow Out (March 30).

DE PALMA RETROSPECTIVE BEGINS TODAY IN BRAZIL
FREE ADMISSION, 15 FILMS, CRITICS' DISCUSSIONS, & 2-DAY COURSE ON CINEMA OF DE PALMA

Beginning today, the Caixa Cultural Curitiba in Brazil presents a 15-film Brian De Palma retrospective, which runs until May 25th, with free admission. The full program can be read online at issuu.com. The program consists of three films per day, with a focus on De Palma's mostly lesser-known films, although Carrie is included, as well. Today the series opens with Bonfire Of The Vanities, Snake Eyes, and Redacted. Each day's final film will be followed by an audience discussion led by a guest critic. The line-up of critics: Ruy Gardnier, Nikola Matevski, Victor Guimarães, Francis Vogner dos Reis and Marcelo Miranda. In addition, there will be a two-day course on May 24-25, titled "The Cinema of Brian De Palma - Belief in the Suspect Image," conducted by critic Paulo Santos Lima.

The retrospective's curator, critic and filmmaker João Toledo, is quoted at Suplemento Cultural: "Brian De Palma flirts with a grandiose and operatic form of cinema, but also with the vulgarity of its falsity, with the levity of its dreams - and his images collide in this middle ground between the tacky , the caricature, the grotesque and the magical, the sublime, the beautiful."

MASTER'S WEEKEND IN ICELAND
THREE DE PALMA FILMS: 'DRESSED TO KILL', 'SCARFACE', 'BLOW OUT'

Bíó Paradís in Reykjavik, Iceland, will screen a "Master's Weekend" trio of Brian De Palma films this weekend, all from the early 1980s: Dressed To Kill on Friday (January 31st), Scarface on Saturday (Feb. 1st), and Blow Out on Sunday (Feb. 2nd). The series has been programmed by Svartir Sunnudagar. We really like the artwork (at left) they put together to promote it.

DE PALMA INCLUDED IN 'RENEGADES' FILM FEST
SERIES IN BRAZIL INCLUDES 'SNAKE EYES' & 'MISSION TO MARS'

Brazil's Clovis Salgado Foundation (FCS) is currently hosting a film festival called "Renegades" at the Cine Humberto Mauro. The fest, which began yesterday and continues through May 30th, features films that were poorly received in their time, but that "have achieved a new position in the reflective and critical overview of cinema, after receiving a range of reinterpretations," according to the official description. Included in the series are two Brian De Palma films: Snake Eyes and Mission To Mars. According to Diverta-Se, FCS cinema manager Rafael Ciccarini argues that the series provides "an opportunity to promote new readings of these films, an attempt to get out of the commonplace regarding such works, provoking the public." The other films included are Paul Verhoeven's Showgirls, Tim Burton's Mars Attacks, Abel Ferrara's Dangerous Game, Michael Cimino's Desperate Hours, M. Night Shyamalan's Lady In The Water, and Clint Eastwood's True Crime.

DE PALMA INAUGURAL SUBJECT OF NEW FILM SERIES
"THE WORKS" MIDNIGHT SERIES AT BROOKLYN'S NITEHAWK BEGINS THIS WEEKEND

Nitehawk Cinema in Brooklyn, New York, begins a new midnight series this weekend called "The Works," which "pays special attention and homage to the people and concepts who inspire a closer look," according to the Nitehawk website. "As Nitehawk’s extended series, The Works highlights a director, actor, composer, genre, or influencer on select midnight screenings over a three-month period."

The series will launch with Brian De Palma as the initial subject, beginning with midnight screenings of Dressed To Kill this Friday and Saturday (January 11 and 12). Five more De Palma films will continue the series over the next couple of months: Femme Fatale (February 1 & 2), Blow Out (February 8 & 9), Obsession (February 15 & 16), Raising Cain (March 1 & 2), and Body Double (March 15 & 16).

Nitehawk is an 18-and-older cinema that serves food and beverages, including specialty dishes and drinks inspired by the films being featured. "The Cinema also presents thirty-minute 'Pre-shows' tailored to each movie that feature local filmmakers and clips curated by our cinema department," according to the Nitehawk website.

'CARRIE' WITH BILL KROHN DISCUSSION TODAY
AS LISBON & ESTORIL FILM FEST OPENS; 'PASSION' TO SCREEN NOV. 16

When I first posted about the Lisbon & Estoril Film Festival, I stated that it would feature a complete Brian De Palma retrospective, up to and including his new film, Passion. Well, as it turns out, the retrospective features a select 16 films from De Palma's filmography, which is not bad for a ten day festival (LEFF runs November 9-18). The festival opens today, and while The Master and Beasts Of The Southern Wild are the official opening night films, earlier in the day, at 12:30pm, De Palma's Carrie will kick off the retrospective. Following the screening, internationally respected critic Bill Krohn will be on hand for a Q&A discussion of the film. In fact, Krohn will be on hand to discuss De Palma's Passion when it screens out of competition at the fest next Friday, November 16. And in between, on Sunday, November 11, Krohn will be the featured guest at screenings of De Palma's The Responsive Eye and Dionysus In '69.

A couple of side notes: In 2007, Krohn placed De Palma's Redacted at number 10 on his list of top 10 films of that year; the closing night film of this year's LEFF will be Cloud Atlas.

This photo was sent in by reader Andreas Kröneck, who found himself standing in the lobby of Paris' Cinema le Grand Action just after a double feature last night, made up of brand new 2K digital prints of Brian De Palma's Dressed To Kill and Blow Out. According to the theater's website, champagne and snacks were to be served during an intermission between the two films. There will be more chances to see these new prints, as the Le Grand Action is taking the opportunity to run a De Palma cycle through August, featuring the two aforementioned films, as well as Body Double (which Andreas was aiming to catch last night), Casualties Of War, The Bonfire Of The Vanities, Carrie, Snake Eyes, Mission: Impossible, and Redacted.

'MURDER A LA MOD', 'GREETINGS', 'SISTERS', & 'REDACTED' PROGRAMMED BY CRITICS IN ARGENTINA

In Argnetina this week (July 23-26), the Channel 7 program Filmoteca will show four lesser-seen De Palma films selected by film critics Fernando Martín Peña and Fabio Manes. Each film will be introduced by the respected critics (an example of Peña's writing can be read in this translated piece on Fritz Lang's Metropolis). The films scheduled are: Redacted (Monday, July 23rd), Greetings (Tuesday, July 24th), Murder A La Mod (Wednesday, July 25th), and Sisters (Thursday, July 26th).

'BODY DOUBLE' IN LONDON
Late notice here, but De Palma's Body Double had two late night screenings this past weekend at the Hackney Picture House. "One of the highlights of the year on Friday and Saturday night this week," Capital Celluloid's Tony Paley posted Friday. "Two very rare screenings of Brian De Palma's underrated mid-1980s Hitchcockian thriller." Paley added Dave Kehr's review from the Chicago Reader:

"It pains me to say it, but I think Brian De Palma has gotten a bad rap on this one: the first hour of this thriller represents the most restrained, accomplished, and effective filmmaking he has ever done, and if the film does become more jokey and incontinent as it follows its derivative path, it never entirely loses the goodwill De Palma engenders with his deft opening sequences. Craig Wasson is an unemployed actor who is invited to house-sit a Hollywood Hills mansion; he becomes voyeuristically involved with his beautiful neighbor across the way, and witnesses her murder. Those who have seen Vertigo will have solved the mystery within the first 15 minutes, but De Palma's use of frame lines and focal lengths to define Wasson's point of view is so adept that the suspense takes hold anyway. De Palma's borrowings from Hitchcock can no longer be characterized as hommages or even as outright thievery; his concentration on Hitchcockian motifs is so complete and so fetishized that it now seems purely a matter of repetition compulsion. But Body Double is the first De Palma film to make me think that all of his practice is leading at least to the beginnings of perfection. With Gregg Henry and Melanie Griffith."

'MISSION TO MARS' WITH POP-UP STORY NOTES ON AMC TUESDAY NIGHT
Finally, the AMC network will show De Palma's Mission To Mars Tuesday (July 24th) at 8pm eastern, with pop-up story notes. The channel is also showing the film today (Sunday) at 5pm eastern, but it is unclear whether that showing will include the story notes. In any case, for those who can't (or don't wish to) catch the program on the newtwork, the story notes can be read on the AMC Blog.

DE PALMA SERIES AT CINEMATHEQUE DE NICE
OTHER FILM SERIES: PARK JUNG-HOON CHOOSES 'SCARFACE' FOR SEOUL; 'BLOW OUT' PART OF TORONTO POLITICAL SERIES

Cinémathèque de Nice kicked off its Brian De Palma film series Tuesday, January 10th. The series, running throughout January, features 18 De Palma films, consisting of every feature the director has made since (and including) Obsession, with the exception of Home Movies and Wise Guys. Last night, Jean Douchet presented Blow Out as part of his Cinema Club, offering his comments about the film and De Palma's work. Douchet provided commentary on the French DVD of De Palma's Hi, Mom!, released a few years ago.

AMERICAN MOVIES AND THE POLITICS OF IDEALISM
Blow Out will also be included in film critic and author Kevin Courrier's weekly lecture series, "Reflections In The Hall Of Mirrors: American Movies And The Politics Of Idealism," at Toronto's Miles Nadal Jewish Community Centre. The series deals with films and ideas for a book Courrier is currently writing, to be published in 2013. According to the web site description, "'Reflections in the Hall of Mirrors' examines how key American movies from the last forty years have soaked up the political and cultural ideals of their time. Since American movies often echo the secret aspirations, the dashed expectations and the country's deeply divisive elements, they shape - and reflect - much of the American public thinking and discourse." The class will take place on Mondays, beginning January 16 with the Kennedy era, and concluding March 26 with the Obama era. Clips from Blow Out will be screened on February 13 as part of the Reagan era class. Other film clips included that night will be from Philip Kaufman's Invasion Of The Body Snatchers, Herbert Ross' Pennies From Heaven, Tony Richardson's The Border, and Barry Levinson's Diner, among others.

10TH ANNIVERSARY OF SEOUL ART CINEMA
Meanwhile, the seventh edition of Cinematheque Friends Film Festival kicked off today, and it includes a celebration of the 10th anniversary of Seoul Art Cinema. According to The Korea Herald, the fest "features a total of 19 films picked by 23 acclaimed cineastes in the country, including filmmakers, film critics, actors and actresses." Actor Park Jung-hoon will present De Palma's Scarface. "I watched the film more than 50 times," the actor told the Herald. "It really mesmerized me throughout my teenage years and during my 20s." The festival runs through February 26th.
