It has been a delight to watch Carrie in Cinema, again, after I watched it in 2016 in Toronto for the De Palma Retrospective

And to see people lining outside in the cold to watch it at 10:45 PM, just as we left our first screening, it gave me goosebumps to witness the moviegoing experience at its best!

I'll doubt this director will ever make another film again. I haven't forgiven that the director turned Jim Phelps into a murderer and traitor with an uninspiring script that doesn't resemble the iconic tv series. The tv show was a mind game without anyone knowing the IMF was there. Last decent film this filmmaker pulled off was Femme Fatale. It was a good movie but not a great movie. His next three efforts I'll forget.

I think you are overracting.

Things change, people change, people go rogue.  Phelps is not God, life corrupted him!

 As for "this director" and his decent films, his art is higy subjective. Femme Fatae is a Masterpiece to many, the writer included.

The Black Dahlia is a great film, Redacted is the best movie about the Iraq War, Passion is excellent

The script to the first movie is mediocre with an obvious villain! Highly predictable! The tv show was a mind game! The IMF would infiltrate foreign countries or organised crime with the targets not realising secret operatives have infiltrated them! IMF was in and out leaving their targets clueless in what happened. Peter Graves character in the tv series was beloved by fans along with Martin Landau, Barbara Bain and Leonard          Nimoy. If the original cast of the tv show appeared in the movie and not turned into murderers with a story true to the sci fi mechanisms of tv show it would have doubled it's box office gross. If DePalma's film came out in the '70's it would have been boycotted! The script to the first film is not what fans expected. DePalma can do whatever he wants just don't call the character Jim Phelps and don't call the movie Mission:Impossible. Paramount has realised turning Jim Phelps into a villain was bad business!

The film was made to different generation, I dont even think that De Palma watched the series. Just like the Untochables, related to the show in name and idea only.

M:I is widely considered, by non De Palma affectionadoes, as the second best M:I films, just after Fallout

By cinephiles, it is the best M:I that has, and will ever be made

Besides, in most De Palma's films, the script takes a backseat, and visual style takes the steering wheel

There were much better ideas and concepts in season 2 and season 3 in the tv series! Rogue Nation and Fallout were the pinnacle of excellence in the Tom Cruise franchise.

I hope when the inevitable reboot happens that the franchise goes back to the mind games of the tv show instead of seeing Tom Cruise continuing running and running!

There was no 3-hour cut. The book's author saw three hours of footage which is par for the course. Assembly cuts always run long because they include redundant footage - alternate camera angles, multiple takes, etc.

The gold standard in the franchise is the first movie.  The nadir for me was the bland JJ Abrams effort. All the other sequels meet a high standard of excellence which includes John Woo's movie!
