A sensual, magical and the most romantic film one can imagine. 1950's Americana and Cold War stand-off mashed-up with a sea creature that can be straight from THE CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON. The Americans have this God like sea creature in a highly classified installation and the Soviets want it. Sally Hawkins is a mute cleaning lady in the government installation and becomes a friend to the creature that has powers that the government can't see. The creature connects with the mute cleaning lady who lives above a cinema. The creature is subjected to cruelty where a double agent scientist helps the mute lady in extracting the creature from the installation. At times very violent and very romantic. THE SHAPE OF WATER would be a good double bill with PAN'S LABRYINTH. Del Toro is a great visual stylist as this is a great looking film and the work of an artist.
