TWO DIFFERENT LISTS OF DE PALMA'S BEST
ONE GOES MOSTLY PERSONAL, THE OTHER MOSTLY ADAPTATIONS

Earlier this month, Hey U Guys' Dave Roper posted his six favorite Brian De Palma films, and they were very interesting, idiosyncratic picks, as only one of them was a film that was both written and directed by De Palma, and even that pick was unusual (Raising Cain). Here are Roper's rankings:

1. Carrie
2. Mission: Impossible
3. The Untouchables
4. Casualties Of War
5. Carlito's Way
6. Raising Cain

Meanwhile, today The Chicago Reader's Drew Hunt posted his top five picks for best De Palma films (part of his "Weekly Top Five" series), and there are at least a couple that you might not expect. Here they are:

1. Blow Out
2. Sisters
3. Femme Fatale
4. Greetings
5. Snake Eyes

I would put PHANTOM OF THE PARADISE on that list. Also I suspect the 3 hour director's cut of THE BLACK DAHLIA would have made those lists if the studio didn't take out 40 minutes of crucial footage that made the film at times nonsensical. The brief scenes with the gangsters in the film seems like those characters were shorten and a whole sub-plot has been left on the cutting room floor. Ellroy has seen the extended cut and refered to it as a masterpiece.

Hmmm, well my number 1 is Blow Out (just rewatched it for first time in a while tonight --- truly De Palma at his peak, thematically and visually)

I like Drew's selections. Femme Fatale is one of De Palma's most underrated films and one of my favorites too. I couldn't pick just 5 films though, I like too many De Palma movies to list.

Greetings from Brazil,

I follow this site for more than ten years (when “Femme Fatale” opens here, I translated and it was published, some of the reviews for the movie). This should be an open and fixed thread on this great source of information about a great artist.

1 - The Untouchables (it’s a “gun for hire” job, not a personal job, but besides being an underrated masterpiece, I have a “personal” relationship with it, since it was one of the movies that triggered my love for cinema at the tender age of 12, when I first saw it)

2 - Phantom of Paradise (pop culture and pop art one of the most fascinanting works ever)

3 - Blow Out (still the best of De Palma classical thrillers – “Dressed…”, “Body Double”, etc

4 - Raising Cain (a sick and twisted movie, which tome, summarize De Palma style)

5 - The Black Dahlia (don’t need the three hours version to love it)

Shame on me: I bought the UK Blu Ray of “Obsession” six months ago, but until now, never saw the movie.

I'd really like to see the longer version of The Black Dahlia, but as the film is widely regarded as a turkey, unfortunately the chances of it being released seem slim.
