Name: "Joanna Leigh"
While there were a few scenes in the filmed play that unbalanced me, it intrigued me enough to actually go out and find the play and I was able to see where certain scenes were changed with the actor (in this case, William Finley) interwove a brief bio of himself for the description of the birth of Dionysus.
In terms of the play, itself, I recall reading somewhere that this was Brian DePalma's strongest connection to Phantom of the Paradise. (Where the audience plays participant as well as spectator). In fact, William Finley is something of a 'SWAN' to William Shepherd's (Pentheus) 'Winslow' of sorts. King of Thebes, he is trying to bring order to his kingdom, and makes a bizarre bargain with Dionysus, in order to restore the order that D was responsible for destroying.....similar to Swan offering to HELP Winslow create the music he (Swan) stole and butchered in the first place. The proverbial Fox garding the hen house.
Truth to tell, I don't remember how the play in the book ended but I like the counter-cultur-ish way William Finley ended the 'stage' version. "You don't wanna vote for me? Write your own name in!" Aaah yes....the 'gods' of 'religion' and politics. Beware them all.
