ICQ URL ALERT PAGE
|
|
| Do you recognize this? If you use ICQ you do. It is a
useful feature of ICQ known as the URL MESSAGE.. With this feature you can send a friend instantly to a great web page you just tripped over, or let the world know you just finished yours. But lately there's been much misuse of the URL MESSAGE.

| If you are unsure of what I'm
talking about I've collected a few examples for you.
|
|
| Here we have a couple of the ever popular virus warning.
Some of them actually take the time and effort to think up a name for their virus, but
most just name names and point fingers. The problem with these is with some of them you
can't be quite sure it's bull or not. It is my belief that most of these virus warnings
are probably started just to hurt someone. This is based on the fact that the majority of
them sound like little kids telling on each other.Besides who would accept a file
from an unknown person anyway?

| Here we have a prime example of pure stupidity. Who in
their right mind would even begin to believe this one? HMMMM..... $3 for each one you
send? Must be bankrolled by Bill Gates himself. Oh and for your information there is no
way an average person working outside of ICQ can track how many users it was sent to. And
I'm not too sure about anyone working there either.

| This one is Probably the lowest anyone can go. To use the premise of an ill child to get people to send these is just slimey. I've visited this URL. It is someone trying to start their site and has nothing to do with a sick child. They more than likely have no idea this URL message exists. | ![]() If this was an actual web page at one time and the 10 cents had to do with hits on the page, then I deeply apologize. But it should have been worded better |
Here we have probably the most popular misuse. There are three major problems with this one. First - I've been to the URL. It's an article on AOL's takeover of ICQ, and not one word is mentioned of deleting users . Second - To let you in on a secret. I have an ICQ account that I established over 2 years ago. Within 3 months of starting the account I had a virus and had to reinstall everything. When it was time to reinstall ICQ I realized I had lost my password. So there my account sits. Untouched for more than 2 years. ICQ has yet to delete it. And Third - When ICQ needs to contact you they will send you a system message. They will not rely on a bunch of fools to do their job for them.

| Finally I just had to show you this one. First time I saw it I almost wet myself. I believe the ignorance factor of this message doesn't need to be pointed out. | ![]() |
| So I beg of you. If you are one of these people who blindly send URL messages without even thinking about it, PLEASE STOP. Nobody likes it. In fact if you take a moment and look over ICQ's thoughts on the subject you would realize that they don't like it either. And if you are a constant victim of this abuse and are as sick of it as I am then here is what you can do.
|
|
| A couple of days after recieving an annoying ICQ URL
message send one just like the one on the right to the person who sent it to you. Only
substitute their UIN# after the # sign. SEND IT ONLY TO THAT PERSON. You don't want to start a vicious rumor now do you? Leave that |
![]() |
up to them. The chances are very good that they
won't even look to notice their own UIN#. Then they can only blame themselves. Or a kinder
solution would be to send them a URL message sending them to this page. Then they might
just get the hint. Please! Do your part and help stop the misuse
of URL messaging.

| All messages deplicted here were actually sent
to my wife. I removed names, numbers, and e-mails to protect the innocent and the ignorant
These are just a few of the hundreds I looked thru.
