Chapter 5: The only thing left
On the car ride home, Reanna sat in the back looking out the window.
She didn’t
know what would happen now. She couldn’t close her eyes because she
would see her
mom’s face, but she didn’t want to open them because reality slapped her
in the face with
the cruel realization that her mom wouldn’t come back. All she wanted
was for the world
to stop and leave her alone. She didn’t want all this pain. She just
wanted to crawl into
bed and sleep forever.
Kevin pulled into the driveway of his house. He got out of the car and
stood up
against the car. Brian pulled up behind him with Nick, A.J., and Howie.
A.J. got out of
the car carrying Dana. Brian walked up to Kevin and gave him a hug. He
said, “Kevin,
we can stay here if you want.”
“Thanks, that would be nice.” They all
walked inside.
Kevin flopped down on the couch while A.J. sat on the floor. Howie took
his shoes off
and sat in the recliner. Brian sat on the kitchen floor with Dana and
Nick talked to Ann at
the kitchen table. Reanna went into Ann’s bedroom and changed into her
pajamas. She
crawled into bed and cried. ‘Why did you go away? What am I ever going
to do without
you? Mom, I miss you so much.’ As she thought this she cried harder. She
cried so much
her eyes hurt. The bedroom door creaked open. Reanna covered her head as
she said
“Whoever it is, please just go away.” The door softly closed but a pair
of feet walked
beside the bed. They crawled up into the bed and pulled the covers onto
them. It was
Dana. “I miss mommy too, so can I stay here with you?” Reanna cried as
she pulled Dana
next to her. She held Dana like a doll. She fell asleep holding onto the
only thing left of
her mother that she had.
