Chp 7
"So, are you almost dressed?"
Kevin and Kat were in the Rosie O'Donald dressing rooms, and Kat was standing behind a privacy screen, dressing for the show. Kevin sat on the other side, waiting patiently.
"Almost.." Kat mumbled. She pulled up her boot. She walked around to the side of the screen, and threw her arm dramatically over the top of it, striking a pose. Kevin’s jaw fell to the ground as he looked her over. She was wearing a bright blue knee length skirt a white 3/4 length sleeves button down shirt, and blue knee boots. The skirt had two huge slits up either side, and the first two and the last two buttons of her shirt were left undone, revealing her pale skin.
"Damn.......Um, This is kinda a family program." Kevin said, his jaw still on the ground.
"Well...A girl has to look good." Kat laughed.
"At least button another button. She'll have to sensor you. Are you sure that liquor you had last night isn’t affecting your brain?"
"Kevin! I didn’t have even have that much to drink. Plus, I look fine. You can’t see anything with these buttons undone."
Kevin stood up and looked at her chest. "You wanna bet?" He smirked. Kat went over and shoved him, covering her chest.
"Don’t be looking places like that..." Kat laughed. But, she did as Kevin suggested and buttoned one more button on her shirt.
"You’re on Ms. Fisher." came an abrupt knock on the door. Kat stood up and looked at her self in the mirror quickly.
"You gonna watch from here?" She asked, as she fixed her hair.
"Yeah, I'll be right here when you return." Kevin said. He gave her a quick hug and turned on the TV to watch the interview. The interview went smoothly, like every other interview. Everyone asked the same questions about her life and the movie. A commercial came on and Kat returned to the dressing room.
"Hey, that was great" Kevin remarked as she came into the room.
"Yeah, right..." Kat huffed. She grabbed her bag.
"Lets leave, I need to meet Betsey Johnson uptown in 45 minutes"
They left to meet Betsey in her NY store. Kevin sat and watched her try dress after dress on. They then went to the hotel, got changed, and went to the party Donatella Versace was throwing.
Kat stuck by Kevin’s side the entire party. She didn’t really feel like socializing. She and Kevin both did a good job of downing the drinks, but Kevin drank much more then she did. Kevin was slurring and stumbling as they went back to the hotel at 4 am.
"You know, Kat.....if everyone hadn’t thought we were together, I woulda gotten laid tonight." Kevin slurred as they rode up the elevator.
"You should be thanking me. They were all bimbos, anorexic, or just plain ditzy." Kat remarked dully. For some reason, Kat didn’t get drunk, so, she was completely normal.
"You know what, Kat?"
"Hm?"
"I miss Trina...She was a bitch, and she made me call her Mistress Trina, and I had to lick her boots and shit......She was one kinky bitch, but she wasn’t fake like all these other whores." Kevin remarked. With that, he stepped off the elevator and sauntered to his room. Kat felt tears form in her eyes as she closed the door to her room. She quickly undressed and threw herself into bed hugging the covers as close as possible. She thought about her past; the family that she hadn’t talked to in a year, Jose, the psychotic ex boyfriend, and Katrina. Trina had always been there, sharing everything. Kat cried because she was alone again. The she thought about Howie, and how she still loved him. She wanted him to be there, stroking her hair telling her not to cry. Kat fell asleep to the emptiness surrounding her.
"Son of a bitch" Kevin muttered. The loud, insistent ringing had awoken him. His throbbing headache reminded him of all the drinks he'd had the night before. He found his cell phone quickly.
"Huh"
"Finally!!! Damn"
"Yo, don’t shout. I have a headache."
"So, I've been trying to call you for the past 12 hours"
"Why, D?"
"Because, I want to know why you’re in NY."
"Um, to see a friend?"
"Oh, really. Do I know this friend?"
"Um....no....her.....his name is, um, Kurt."
"Oh, really. Well, there was a great live show from the party last night on E last night. Kurt has some nice legs"
"I know, doesn't he?"
"So, Kev, why am I the only fucking person who doesn’t know you’re visiting Kat in NY? I called AJ, he knew, Brian knew, even Nicky fucking knew."
"D, chill. I came to help you figure this shit out. I'm helping you."
"Well............is it working?"
"I dunno. I meant to talk to her last night, but we went to the party, and I got so drunk.......and...hold up...I think I might have said something wrong to her last night."
"Like what?"
"I think I mentioned Katrina."
'Well, that would explain my sick feelings last night' Howie thought to himself. It seemed whenever Kat got upset, he would feel sick.
"Well, you better check on her. If she’s hurt, I’ll kill you"
"Ok, ok, I’m coming home in 2 days, then the day after that we fly to LA for her premiere, ok?"
"Yeah"
"Ok, talk to ya later"
"Later" Howie sighed as he stared at the phone. It was awful knowing Kat was still mad at him. He finally thought of something that might soften her up a bit. He quickly dialed a phone number.
Kat awoke slowly, stretching in her bed before deciding to actually get up. She didn’t have a photo shoot or anything until 5, and it was only 2. She had feeling of nausea when she realized she really needed to take the pregnancy test that was tucked in her bathroom. 'After my shower' she thought as she unclothed. She was just about to step into the shower when there was a knock at her door. She huffed and put on her bathrobe. She opened the door and was immediately assaulted by a bouquet of roses. The man smiled as he handed her a dozen red, then a dozen yellow roses. H tipped his hat and was gone. Kat sat the flowers down and reached for the card.
Kat,
I couldn’t remember which color was used to ask for forgiveness, so I'm sending you every color.
Please forgive me
I love you
Howie.
Kat couldn’t help but smile. She had never been sent roses before. She threw the card on the bed and hopped into the shower. As she washed, she thought about calling him. She got out, and took out the pregnancy test. She sat on the side of the tub, and looked at the box, her hands shaking. 'Just fucking take the test.' Her head was spinning with questions and worries. 'What if Howie doesn’t want a child? What if he does and I decide I'm not ready for a child yet? I'm 19, a little young for children.' Kats mind spiraled out of control as she took the test. She couldn’t stand sitting there waiting for the test results, so she went to get dressed. She barely had her jeans zippered when another knock came at her door. She opened it and her jaw fell.
"Ma'am, I believe these are all yours" There were at least 8 more dozen roses, in every possible color.
"Oh, my god" she muttered. She stood back as the man placed all the roses in her room, and left. Kat looked around at all the roses. She picked up the card, and stared at it. She would probably have to talk to him anyway, but, if she called, he would think he was off the hook. She didn’t want to let him off the hook that easily. Her phone rang.
"Hey Kat. Can we talk?"
"Yeh, Kev, Come on over"
"Great, be there in 2."
About 2 minutes later, the knock at her door came. Kat was stunned when she saw yet another flower delivery boy, standing with even more roses. Then she saw Kevin walking down the hallway.
"What’s this?" Kevin asked, his mouth agape as he entered the room.
"I feel like I'm in a garden."
"Who are these from? There are like over a hundred roses in here!
Kat sighed. "Who do you think?"
"Howie? Man ,he’s smart.....and, so..."
"Sweet..." Kat muttered, smiling slightly.
"Exactly" Kevin said "So, that’s what I needed to talk to you about. What’s up with you and him?"
"Well, I don’t know. Kat said. "He really hurt me. I mean, didn’t he love me enough to not sleep with that slut?"
"He was drunk"
"I don’t care! How can I trust him?"
"Kat, listen. In all the time I've known Howie, he’s never cheated on anyone"
"I’m the lucky one" Kat remarked dryly.
"I think its because, the day we left, he was so unsure about you loving him. It’s like, he had to have proof you loved him. And if you didn’t love him so much, you wouldn’t be this upset. And if he didn’t love you as much as he does, he wouldn't feel like such an asshole. For the past few months, all we've heard is 'I hope Kat is ok' 'I miss Kat' 'I wonder if Kat will ever love me again'"
"I still love him" Kat said exasperated.
"Good. And he loves you, more then anyone. He thinks you’re the one. And to let you in on a guy secret, when we love a girl that much, we get scared. He was scared, and confused, and worried. He’s been beating himself up ever since it happened."
"Well, I can’t figure him out." Kat was interrupted by yet another knock on the door.
Kat opened the door to even more roses.
"This has to stop!" Kat exclaimed. She sat down on the bed.
"I'm going to use the bathroom, ok?" Kevin said. Kat sat waiting for him to come out. Five minutes later, she went and knocked on the door.
"Kev....."
Kevin came and opened the door, and strange look on his face.
"What’s wrong?" Kat asked, slightly worried. He said nothing. Kats eyes flickered into the bathroom, and saw the test sitting on the counter. A lump raised in her throat as she walked over and picked it up slowly. She didn’t look at it, but sat on the side of the bathtub. What this test said would affect her entire life. She slowly looked down at the stick. A big plus sign stared back at her.
"Oh, shit" Kat breathed. Kevin came and stood in front of her.
"Um....its, Howie’s, right?" Kevin asked looking at the ground.
"Of course its Howie’s" Kat practically yelled. All of a sudden her emotions went into overload.
"Ok, ok....So....Are you happy?" Kevin asked. Kat shut her eyes and rubbed her forehead. With all of her emotions running through her body, the most evident one was a feeling of happiness.
"Um......I think so........" Kat said. A small smile formed on her lips. A thought crossed her mind and her smile vanished.
"Will Howie be upset?" Kat asked, looking worriedly at Kevin.
"If I know Howie.....I would say he’s going to be ecstatic" Kevin sat next to her and put his arm around her.
"Should I call him?" Kat asked nervously. Kevin shook his head. Kat stood up and got her phone.
Kevin stood in the doorway. She dialed the number, and waited for the answer.
"Hello?" Howie answered. Kat fell silent, forgetting what she had planned to tell him.
"Hello?" he said again.
"Hi Howie" Kat finally responded.
"Kat? Is that you?"
"Yes."
"Oh my god! I can’t believe you called!" Howie said happily.
"Don’t get too excited. Please stop sending me the roses." Kat sighed.
"Don’t you like them?" Howie asked, the hurt sounding in his voice.
Kat sighed. "I love them."
"Great!" Howie exclaimed, interrupting her.
"But..."
"But what baby?"
"But, I want you to sop sending me them"
"They made you call me" Howie pointed out. Kat could think of no response.
"Are you going to forgive me?" Howie asked.
"Howie.." Kat paused, getting ready to cry. "Roses can’t make my heart stop hurting."
"But, I don’t know how else I can show you how sorry I am!"
"I know you’re sorry. I just need time, ok?"
"But, Kat."
"Bye Howie." Kat hung up, and threw the phone on the bed.
"Why didn’t you tell him?" Kevin exclaimed.
"I cant tell him I’m going to have his child over the telephone........." Kat exclaimed, still shaken over the news. She felt bad she’d totally blanked out over the phone.
"But, Kat"
"I’ll tell him at the premiere, ok?" Kat exclaimed.
"But...."
"Kevin, promise me you won’t say anything!" Kat pleaded. Kevin sighed.
"I promise."
