Mine........
Epilogue - Chapter Fourteen

"....memories fade.......they're designed that way....."

Darren walked quickly ahead of Daniel back to the car.  He couldn't wait to get inside and close the door.

He got in and put his head back on the cushion.  Daniel soon followed and closed the door.  "Finally, eh?", said Daniel.  "Yeah........."  "What's wrong, Darren?  Really."  Darren laughed.  "God, so many things.  You got an hour or two?"  "Aw, come on, it can't be all that bad."

"Well, let's see", said Darren.  "I found the fame I wanted, now I can't take a pee without someone knowing about it.  I lost my wife and an amazing woman I met.  I am adored by millions, but am completely alone.  How's that?"  Daniel didn't know what to say.  He had been unaware that Darren was so unhappy.

"Well, Daz, the price of fame is that your life is not your own any longer.  You knew that.  As far as Colby, I don't know what to say about that.  That's really between you two.   The amazing woman I assume is Jennifer.  So, go get her Darren.  I TOLD you that already."

"Go get her?  Go get her, he says.  Like it was 15 minutes ago and I can just run after her.  It was months ago and besides I treated her like shit.  Absolute shit.  She wouldn't want to see me, believe it."  "Well, all I have to say, Mr. Hayes, is that you'll never know if you don't find out.  And if you don't at least try you're a fool and I don't want to hear another word."

2 weeks later

Savage Garden finally took some time off.  Their manager, John Woodruff, felt it was time for the poor boys to have a vacation after all they have done and accomplished in the last 3 years.

Daniel took Michelle and flew off to the Canary Islands.  They had two whole weeks alone - the honeymoon they never actually had.  The rest of the band took off in different directions.

Darren didn't know what to do or where to go.  Brisbane?  Ha!  and run into Colby and her guy with MY dog?  I don't think so...........  Sydney?  Nah.  The Islands?  Nah.  Well, isn't this great?  The vacation I coveted so much and now I have no where to go.

Then it hit him..............................

Why not???   What do I have to lose????

Like a whirlwind, he made all the arrangements and got on a plane and made his way back to where he met Jennifer.  "You'll never know if you don't find out" - Daniel's words screamed in his head.  He's right.  I will wonder and think about this for the rest of my life if I don't do something about it.

He arrived and found his way back to the same hotel he had stayed in there and where he had spent the night with her.  He walked around and looked at every place he was with her.  The floor by the window, the living room where he sang to her, the bathroom, the bed.  Now........how do I find her?  I didn't take her home - she didn't tell me where she lived.  He pulled out the phone book.  Typical - no Jennifer Wilson.  He picked up the phone and called the front desk.  "Hi, this is Mr. Hayes in Suite 384.  Can you tell me, well, that is to say, is there a way to track down the address of someone a hotel driver took home?"  "Why certainly, Mr. Hayes.  Was this today?"  Darren chuckled.  "Ahhh, no, this was about 4 months ago."  Silence.

"Well, Mr. Hayes. *cough*  I am not sure.  It would take some research and a good deal of time."  "Well, that's alright, mate, I'll be here for awhile", Darren said cheerfully.   The man at the desk rolled his eyes.  "Yes, I understand sir, but......."  "Look, Mr. ....Mr....."  "I am Mr. Weinberg at your service, sir."  "Mr. Weinberg.  This is very important and I have flown from New York to look up an old friend.   I would sincerely appreciate your help with this."  "Have you tried to find this FRIEND on your own, Mr. Hayes?"  "Well, I asked my assistant Jessica to try, but she had no luck."

"Mr. Hayes.  You are an honored guest here.  But I must ask you......."  "Mr. Weinberg, please this is very important to me."  Silence.  "Alright, Mr. Hayes.  I will get my assistant on it.  Can you please give me more detail?"

Jennifer was at work and had no idea Darren was so nearby.  There had been no "news" of the band in so long, she figured they must be taking a break.  She had heard women in the office talking about them and their new album and how cute and sexy Darren was and she could only laugh to herself.....if they only knew!  She had a picture of him in her wallet and took it out occasionally and thought "you're just torturing yourself, you fool.  He's not coming back"..............

She had to go to a class after work, so she would not be coming home right away.  She liked this class she was taking.  Psychology.  Very interesting and gave her insights into some strange dreams she had been having lately.

When it was at last time to leave, she went over to the window and looked outside.  Raining again.  Well, it fits her mood.  Might as well rain for the rest of her life.

She went down to the car and started it.  Or tried.  Tried again.  Nothing.  Again.  Cough, cough, sputter.  Oh wonderful.  No point in getting out and making a show of it by looking under the hood - she had no idea what she is looking for.  She kept trying and all it did was sputter back at her.  She just sat in the drivers seat looking out the window.  Great.  Looks like I am walking to class.  At least it's in this car port that is guarded.  She made her way to the entrance and told the guard it was dead and she would leave it there.  He assured her he would keep an eye on it.

Jennifer made her way to the class, had no umbrella and was a drowned rat by the time she got to the class.    She noticed many other people were soaked, so at least she wasn't the only fool who forgot to bring an umbrella.

She listened attentively as they talked about the subject of dreams.  She had been having many odd dreams lately and most of them involved Darren in some way.  She just figured it was on her mind, but she was learning it was something much more deep rooted and hidden away in her subconscious.

Darren was in his room at the hotel and was trying to complete this song he had been working on, which felt like to him, forever.  Just couldn't complete the lyrics, which was odd for him.

The working title was "I See you In My Dreams" and he just couldn't get the last verse down.

"I close my eyes and you are there
Do you see me?
I reach out for your hand, you are near.......
Do you see me?"

After that?........well, nothing comes.  This is the last verse and he just can't seem to get it right.

The phone ringing jars him out of his thoughts.  He gets up to answer the phone and kicks the side of the table with his foot.  "Aw, shit!.  Ow, ow, ow.  Damn it."  So he answers the phone, "OW, ow, yes, hello?"  "Are you quite alright, Mr. Hayes?"  "Yes, ow, ow, may I help you?  OW."  "Yes, well, this is Mr. Weinberg from the front desk.  I have the information you wanted."

"You do???"  Pain suddenly subsides.  "Say that's great!  Can you tell me?"    "Certainly.  Ms. Jennifer Wilson was taken home exactly 126 days ago (Darren rolls his eyes) by our Mr. Windsor.  She was taken to 7463 Sydney Street.  Will you require anything else, Mr. Hayes?"  Yeah, Darren thinks, an ice pack.  "No, Mr. Weinberg.  Thank you very much for your help.  I appreciate it very much.  Cheers."   He hangs up and thinks well, Darren, you have her address.  Now there is nothing stopping you - except maybe this horrific pain in your foot.   He hobbles over to the bathroom to take a shower.

The class is over and Jennifer approaches the professor to ask a few questions.  "Excuse me, Professor Green, do you have a moment?"  He looks up and smiles, "Why certainly Jenny (she HATES Jenny), what can I do for you?"  "Well, I have been having some very strange dreams lately and they always involve one person."   "Go on"  "Well, it's someone from my past and the situation was somewhat, well, unresolved, let's say.  He comes into the dreams in various forms, but I always know it is him.  And always when I reach out for him, I can never seem to get to him."  "Well, Jenny (grrrrrr), this is a classic dream of, well, you said it yourself, an unresolved situation.  You still want this person, hence the reaching out, but he always is just out of reach.  Is it possible for you to resolve the situation?  Find this person?"  HA!, she thinks.  RIGHT!  "Well, that would be difficult."  "Don't know where he is now?"  "Ya, you could say that."  OK, put an ad in the paper - "Desperately Seeking Darren.  Must resolve my love for you.  Please respond!"  Jennifer laughs out loud thinking of it.  "What's so funny, Jenny?"  "Oh, nothing Professor, I figured that's what it meant.  Thanks for your time."

She leaves the class not really any more informed than she was when she walked in.  What an ass that professor is.  I could have told him THAT meaning.  Duh.......

Darren finally has himself ready to go on his way.  He is wearing a lovely blue shirt that brings out his eyes UNBELIEVABLY.  Makes them look even bluer.  He puts on his Dolce & Gabanna.  He laughs to himself thinking of an article in the paper saying all the Savage Garden fans had raided the shelves and bought all the D&G they could find.  It's amazing what power you have when you're famous.  Dolce & Gabanna should give him an award of some kind for making their product so popular.

OK, he's dressed and stands looking at himself in the mirror and practicing.  "Hi, Jennifer.  How have you been?"  No.  "Hi, Jen."  Don't call her Jen.  Too personal.  Cough.  "OK, hi, Jennifer, I was in town, so......"  NO.    Shit.........

He straightens up.  OK.  "Hello, Jennifer.  Remember me?"  Jesus!!!!!  NO!!!!!!!!

He finally decides it will come naturally when he sees her and practicing is ridiculous.  He makes arrangements for the hotel driver to take him over there and leave him there.  Might not be good if a huge big limo is sitting outside her house.

Jennifer is walking home from class.  It's raining but not as hard as before.  She doesn't care anyway.  All she can think about is Darren.  She has thought in the past that she thinks about him too much and should just let it go.  It was a one night stand, Jen.  At least you HAD him.  Let it go.  But the thing that nags at her is the fact that he said "I love you."  If he hadn't said that then maybe she could file it away in her mind..........She can't for the life of her figure why he would say that, when it was obvious he didn't have to and she would have slept with him anyway.  And he didn't seem like the type of guy that said things like that flippantly and casually.  It was driving her nuts.  She dug her hands deeper into her pockets and headed home............
