At about 2am, they pulled some blankets from the bed again and wrapped themselves in them and sat by the window looking out at the beautiful city below. They talked and talked and laughed. The traded stories of wants, desires and dreams. Jennifer felt as if she knew Darren so well already. His eyes were so expressive and deep she felt she knew exactly what he was thinking. He spoke so excitedly about Brisbane, Australia, Obi, he likes and dislikes. And Darren, well, Darren felt that this was destiny and meeting Jennifer was in the stars and meant to happen. Darren was a strong believer in destiny and fate. They finished each other's sentences, laughed at the same things, had strong feelings about many of the same issues. But there was still the matter of Colby.
When it was after 5am, Darren said to Jen, "are you sleepy?" She looked up at him and smiled, "no, I want to spend as much time with you as I can". He looked at her and examined every detail of her face and smiled. "We really should get some sleep. It's after 5. Come on, we can talk in bed".
He stood up and held out his hand and took hers and led her to the bed. They climbed in under the blankets and cuddled up together. "So, tell me, Jen, what will you do tomorrow?" She is thinking I want to be with you. But says to him, "Oh, I don't know Darren. How about you?" "Well, I have to get packed up and get ready to check out of here." Is he leaving?? "You have to check out tomorrow"? "Well, not necessarily tomorrow, but I have to start collecting my stuff. It's all over the place". They both laughed.
Darren soon fell asleep. Jen was talking with him and he didn't answer. She looked at him and he was fast asleep. That beautiful face. She touched the side of his face and whispered, "I love you, Darren........." She got comfortable in the bed and put her head on his shoulder and he instinctively put his arms around her.
When Jennifer woke up, Darren was gone. She panicked. She looked around to see if his clothes were still there. Did he leave??? No, it's OK, his clothes are here. She didn't hear the shower, so she wondered where he was. She got out of the bed and put his shirt on and looked out into the living room and found him sitting in a chair looking out the window, as if in deep thought. She was about to see the other side of Darren. The stubborn, thoughtful and sometimes hurtful Darren.
She wasn't sure whether she should approach him or leave him alone. As she turned to walk back in to the bedroom, he heard her and turned around. "Jennifer, good morning, did you sleep well?" "Yes, I did Darren, the best!" and smiled brightly. He didn't smile back. Just looked at her. Then after a long pause said, "good, I'm glad" and went back to looking out the window. He's acting a little odd, she thought. Maybe he's just not a morning person.
She felt like she should take a shower - and soon. Maybe he wants to be alone. She started gathering her clothes and went into the bathroom and turned the shower on. Darren continued to sit and look out the window. Colby. Colby. I have betrayed her - I have betrayed our marriage. The vows I took. The last thing I said to her before leaving Brisbane. "Colby, you have nothing to worry about. I love you and will always be faithful. Remember in "Truly Madly Deeply" and smiled at his wife. And this wasn't just some meaningless one night stand. He felt like he was falling in love. But there was the small problem of a WIFE. He loved Colby. But if he loved Colby, how could he have told Jen last night "I love you"? He closed his eyes. What was he doing????
Jennifer got out of the shower and didn't even bother putting make up on or doing her hair. She just combed it through and pulled it back. She felt this tension in the room and the urgency to leave. An amazing turnabout from last night. What had happened?
She got dressed and picked up her bag and walked out into the living room. He didn't even turn around. Jennifer felt so out of place and so intrusive with him acting this way. She finally cleared her throat and said, "Darren, do you want to get some coffee or breakfast?" He turned and looked at her slowly, looking at her as if he had never seen her before. Such a hard expression on his beautiful face. Who is this, she is wondering? Where is Darren??
"No, Jennifer, I can't. I have a million things to do today. You know how it is".
Huh????? I KNOW HOW IT IS???????
He stood up and walked over to a table in the room, picked up his wallet and took out money. Jennifer was horrified. Am I being paid?????
"Um, Jen. *cough* Jennifer. Please take this money for a taxi to get you home." Ok, who the fuck is this and what have you done to my Darren?? "Darren, is something wrong?" Darren coughs again and says, "No, no nothing. I just thought you would need some money to get home". Jennifer was unbelievably hurt and angry. She could not BELIEVE this was the same guy who was here last night.
When she didn't answer him, he looked up and she was just standing there staring at him. God, he felt awful. How can I do this to her? What a shit I am. "Darren.......I...."
He cut her off. "Or I can have the hotel driver take you wherever you want to go". A tear slowly made it's way down her face as she stared at him. Oh, God, Darren thought, I have never felt so bad in my whole life. Why am I doing this?
"Darren, I don't want your money.
I want you......." Darren walked across to the window again and put
one arm up on the wall and the other on his hip. "...Jennifer.......
You know I am married. You must know that. I have been sitting
her thinking about Colby and everything that has happened between you and
I. I feel awful. Just awful. I don't want to hurt you,
but I don't want to hurt Colby either. I made a vow to her and a
promise before I left." He received no answer and turned around just
in time to see her walking toward the door. When she reached it,
she turned and simply said, "I love you Darren Hayes. Remember that",
opened the door, walked out and closed it behind her. The sound of
the closing door echoed in the room. Then there was only silence,
Darren and his tortured mind.
Darren is walking around the hotel room, not knowing what the hell to do with himself. He decides he should call Colby.
