Son Goku is the main character in the Dragonball series. The name "Son Goku" is taken from a Chinese mythological figure. Son of Bardock and brother of Radditz, Goku is a member of the fighting race the Saiyan (Saiya-jin) from planet Vegita. He, like all Saiyans, has a simian tail. With it he can transform into a large ferocious ape and become very destructive. As an infant he was sent on a mission to help condition earth for take over, but a childhood head injury made him forget his primary objective. Thus becoming the gentle and sweetly innocent person we see now. As a child Goku had his tail removed and is no longer able to transform into an ape. Goku's strength lies in his passion to fight and to be the best fighter. He strives on fighting strong opponents. When it seems that Goku is beat he always comes up with something to fend off defeat. He was trained by great teachers such as Mutenroshi (or Kame-sennin, the turtle master), Sennin (that cute chubby cat with the sensu beans), and Kaio-sama (King Ki). When Goku matures (at around age 16-17) he marries Ox King's daughter Chi Chi. Together they have two children: Son Gohan and Son Goten. During the battle of Freeza, Goku was the first to inherited the ability to change into the legendary Super Saiyan. Having always the challenge of fighting stronger opponents, it was typical of Goku to stay ahead of everyone. What is strange about Goku is his ability to outwit and befriend his enemy. Some of his past enemies later become his ally. He does not bother nor care about leaders of Earth, politics, and power. His only concern is the righteousness of humanity (and all other races for that matter) and fightin strong opponents.
Gohan!

Gohan (Japanese for rice or refering to a meal) made his first
appearance at
the beginning of Dragon ball Z (in the US version. If you watched the
Japanese version you would have first seen him at the end of Dragon
ball).
He is the son of Goku, or Kakarroto, the star of Dragon Ball and DBZ
through
the majority of the series, and the strongest of all the saiyans in
Dragon
Ball Z. From the beginning, Gohan continuosly proves himself worthy in
both
movies and the series. It is Gohan who defeats Garlic Jr. in the first
DBZ
movie using what I consider Gohan's signature attack, the flying
headbutt.
Gohan's personality is crucial to his fighting technique. Ordinally a
well-mannered passive individual, Gohan explodes into fits of rage to
defend
those he cares about or even Vegeta. Because of his Saiyan-human
heritage,
Gohan is inheritly stronger than most Saiyans (especially overly cocky
fighters).

Life Story...
Vegeta-sama is the only saya-jin to remember his home planet. When he was young, he was kidnapped by Furiza and "enslaved" to destroy planets for him. He, Raditz, Nappa, and Goku were the only survivors after Furiza blew up Planet Vegeta. When faced with a difficult planet to destroy, Raditz went to get Goku to join their ranks. However, while in the area, Raditz met with an untimely death, (Kick ass, Piccolo-sama!) Ok. Well, before dying, Raditz is told about the DRAGONBALLS which can be used to make a wish. He transmits the information to his comrades, Vegeta and Nappa.
So a year later, they show up. Goku was killed during the fight with Raditz, so he is making his way back to Earth. They kill Yamcha, Tienshinhan, Chotzu, and Piccolo (sob) before Goku arrives. After defeating Nappa, Vegeta blows him up, claiming that he doesn't need a weak saya-jin. So then Goku and Vegeta fight. Of course, Goku wins, but spares Vegeta's life.
Now all the fighters are going to Planet Namek to find the other Dragonballs to wish back the fallen warriors. Somehow (I never got this) Vegeta is there with Furiza, and they happen to be looking for the same thing. There is a long and drawn-out struggle for the Dragonballs. Eventually, Vegeta decides that he's got more luck on the good side. After the Ginyu force is defeated, Vegeta takes a nap while Goku regenerates. Of course, the Earthlings call the dragon. Yada yada yada. I'm just taking about Vegeta here.
Well he wakes up, pissed as hell and runs after them, only to find himself embroiled with Furiza in a fight to the death. Which he loses. (SOB)
Well, when he's wished back to life on earth (I'm going by the Manga, people) he hangs at the Capsule Corp until Furiza comes back and is defeated by Trunks, his son from the future. This is a MAJOR supprise. I mean, him and Bulma? Good jesus man. So then he goes away for another three years, training at the Capsule Corp, knocking up Bulma, having a baby with her. (and doing God knows whatever else. ;) ) until the Androids arrive. After really SMACKING # 19 and 20, he thinks he's got it good until he gets beaten by #18 and her brother.
Then come the Cell Saga where he takes more pride blows to the head. Well, in the end, he ends up getting really pissed when Trunks gets killed, and attacks Cell. And misses. Ouch, Veggie-kun.
Well, during the famous Kamehameha a la Gohan and Goku, Cell seems to be getting the upper hand until, SMACK in the face, Vegeta hits him. And Cell, being distracted by the hit, is destroyed by Gohan's Kamehameha. So it was all VEGETA, people. Oh yeah. Well, Vegeta denies doing it for the Earth. But its true. He cared. And the only one who knew it was Piccolo-sama.
So now, seven years later, he enters the Tenkaichibudokai with everyone else, including a dead Goku. (Killed in the battle with cell) After Babi-dee enters stage left, Vegeta sells his soul in order to become MAJIN VEGETA (Demon-person Vegeta) He is intent on kicking Goku's ass, (like always) and what follows has to be one of the most enjoyable fights of the show, Majin Vegeta VS Goku. In my multimedia section I've got a music video of the fight. I give it two thumbs up. Anyways, One of the best scenes it where he traps Goku on a mountain and smacks him across the face, twice, then knees him in the Saya-jin Pride. So thats why Goku has such a high and whiney voice. Anyways, as it turns out, he wasn't that evil, and proved it by blowing himself up in an attempt to defeat Majin Buu. Well, lots of stuff happens after he dies, but eventually he convinces the TenShin to let him go back and help Goku out. So they fuse to form VEGETTO, a really cool combo. They get absorbed by Buu, save the others, only to have blow up the earth. And the others. Oops. eh Son-kun? Anyways, they fight Buu until Vegeta gets a BRILLIANT idea. He asks Dende (who was spared) to wish back the earth people and for him to ask them if they can lend Son-kun some energy to make the genki dama. Of course, never being a people person, he ends up calling the earthlings stupid. Well, after everyone has a shot at convincing the earthlings, Goku throws the genki dama and defeats Buu. Next time we see the group is um, 10 years in the future. This is one of my fav mangas because Vegeta is wearing a leather, yes leather jacket. Bulma is pissed that he doesn't age, and he replies "Stupid woman. We saya-jin's don't age so we can fight longer." Eventually he makes Trunks participate in the Budokai by threatening to take away his allowence. (Am I the only one that finds this funny?) There Goku finds Ubuu, or buu reincarnated, and goes off to train him. This is the end of Dragonball Z.

There are two Trunks in the Dragonball world. One from the alternate timeline, future Trunks (Mira Trunks) and one from the actual timeline, young Trunks (Goku referred to this Trunks as Chibi Trunks). This profile focuses on the Trunks from the alternate future. In the alternate timeline, all of the Z team members were killed because of two destructive androids, except for Goku who never gets to fight because of a heart infection. The only survivors were Son Gohan and Trunks. Trunks is the son of Vegita and Bulma. Gohan trained him to become stronger and to reach the level of Super Saiyan. One day the androids appeared and, Gohan confident that he can beat them, had enough of the destruction. By protecting the inexperienced Trunks, Gohan knocked him unconscious and fought them alone. Gohan is powerful, but is killed nevertheless. Trunks grieves deeply and vows to one day avenge Gohan's death. Meanwhile Bulma builds a time machine for Trunks so he could go back in the past to find Son Goku. She believes that if he were alive, things would have been different. Trunks comes to the past twenty years from the future in a effort to change history. Much like his father, he is hard and aggressive. But unlike his father he is very polite and has values. He thinks in conventional ways and is very civilized when making decisions. While Trunks was young, he grew up in awe of the father he never knew. Trunks was always anxious about meeting his father. He was both impressed and disappointed once they. During the battle of Cell however, Vegita showed emotion upon seeing the death of his son (that may be subject to debate for all you hard core nuts!!) Vegita then screamed with passion and attacked Cell. The Z team revived him after Cell was defeated. He decided to return to his timeline once the danger was over. Trunks had trained in that time so much that his power surpassed the two androids in his time. When he returned to the future, he not only took with him the skills to defeat the androids but also the knowledge of the father he loved so much.

Piccolo is the reborn Devil himself. Many years ago, A Namekian was sent to earth in fear that a comet would soon hit the planet Namek. The man we know as Kami-sama (which translates into god or the god of earth) wanted to take the place of the watcher of earth. But in order for him to do that he had to purge the small amount of evil that was within him. When Kami-sama did this his spirit split into two. Thus, from the expulsion of Kami's evil side, was the birth of an evil entity called Piccolo-Diamao (Piccolo the demon). Piccolo-Diamao was evil and destructive causing cities to disappear. Eventually this evil being came across Goku (when he was young). They fought an epic battle, with Goku killing Piccolo-Diamao. On his dying breath he spat out an egg which hatch into the Piccolo in the Z team. Young Piccolo was evil like his father. A native of the planet Namek, he has the ability to regrow parts of his body that he lost. He and Goku were enemies as teenagers and fought many times. However when he was forced to train Goku's son Gohan before Vegita and Nappa were to come to earth, a different side of Piccolo is revealed and we see that he is not entirely evil after all. Gohan's innocence and friendliness help Piccolo become a different person changing him to be on the side of good instead of evil. Further in the story Piccolo develops a paternal affection for Gohan, protecting him. During the Android saga, Kami-sama nulls on the decision to remerge with his "evil" counter part noting that Piccolo has good in his heart. Kami eventually decides to do so forever putting him on the side of good and fighting with the Z team.
Chi Chi!

Chi Chi is Son Goku's wife. She met him in DB and traveled with him and Bulma. Later she married him and gave birth to Son Gohan. Her sole purpose in DBZ is to provide comci relief, as all of her scenes have something supposedly funny. Her main goal in life is probably to yell at her family, and make sure her sons are scholars, thus making Gohan a nerd. She's always worrying about Goku, and her two sons, Gohan and Goten.
Goten!

Son Goku's youngest son; he was born shortly after the battle with Cell. Son Goku didn't even know that his second son existed until he was granted one day to come back to Earth. Son Goten was trained by his older brother, Gohan, and reached Super Saiyajin level at a very early age. His best friend is Chibi Trunks who is only a year older than he is. Trunks was the only person that could defeat him during the junior Tenkachi Budokai. Goten and Trunks merged when fighting Boo, forming Gotenks, one fo the most powerful characters in the series. Gotenks could reach Super Saiyan Level 3, and with this power was able to kick Boo around. Their only flaw was they were careless, and so they were absorbed into Boo.
Bulma!

Bulma is a spirited young girl that was first introduced in the original Dragonball series. She just happened to hit Son Goku with a car! Anyway, she took him along as a bodyguard to journey for the dragonballs. On her journey, she met up with Yamcha, Oolon, Puarru, Kamesennin, and other characters. Eventually, she hooks up with Yamcha. In DBZ, Bulma is a great asset when it came to using saiyajin technology, as she made the trip to Namek with Krillin and Son Gohan. Bulma's most important role in the series is probably after she has a child with Vegita. Her son, Trunks, was the key to saving the future. She also had a daughter named Bra that barely played a role in the story at all.

Krillin is a long time friend of Son Goku's, meeting him in the oringinal DB series. Krillin is a warrior monk who trained along with Goku under Kamesennin. Once a rival, they became great friends. Krillin was killed by Piccolo, but later brought back. In DBZ, he was one of the Z Warriors that faced the Saiyajin. Though they lost badly, Son Goku's return gave them an easy victory over Nappa. Later, Goku had to give Krillin his Genki Dama energy, and though Kuririn missed Vegeta with the ball, Gohan managed to bounce it back at him. Krillin was an essential player during the Freeza Saga, as he and Gohan had to do pretty much everything on Namek until Goku showed up. His death by Freeza is also what caused Goku to turn Super Saiyajin. Later during the Cell Game, he gets a crush for 18 Gou (Number 18) and later they get married after she's wished into a human. They have a baby girl called Marron.
King Kia!

He is the north Kaio that lives on a distant planet in Heaven. He enters the series when he needs to train Goku after Goku has died fighting Raddtiz. Kaio-Sama is known for his interesting since of humor and even starts off his training by forcing his students to make him laugh. Though very humorous, he is very intelligent and helps Goku alot, training him greatly for the battle with the saiyajin in the Vegtia saga. In the Freeza Saga, we also see Yamcha, Chazo, Tienshinan, and Piccolo train with Kaio-Sama. Kaio-Sama has a pet monkey named Bubbles which he uses in his trainng for gravity purposes as well as just being a friend. Kaio-Sama dies when Goku brings the soon-to-be self destructed Cell to his planet, using teleportation. Of course Kaio-Sama is pretty ticked off when he finds that Goku has blown up his planet but he quickly gets over it. Kaio-Sama is a great character and he is responsible for Goku's Kaioken and Genki Dama attacks.
Master Roshi!

He is a perverted old dude that lives on Kame House with Oolong and Puarru. Master Roshi, or Kamesennin, is the first teacher of both Kuririn and Son Goku, teaching them both the infamous Kamehameha. He also gave Goku the Flying Nimbus.
Chaozu!

Chaozu is the little friend of Tien. He was originally the emperor of Mifan and later studied the teachings of Tsurusennin. While not the greatest fighter in the world, he was one of the first Dragonball characters to use bujutsu (ability to fly) and he can also execute where he destroys himself and the enemy he's clinging on to. Though he tries this on Nappa, it has no effect. Chaozu becomes really useless after the Saiyajin saga, though he wasn't much of a use during it either.
Tien!

Tien, along with Chaozu, originally trained under Tsurusennin but later abandoned this when they found out he was evil. They then worked as con artists, releasing monsters and getting payed for chasing them away. While Tien was originally an enemy of Son Goku, and faced him in the Tenkachi Budokai, he later becomes friends with him. Tien is quite a strong fighter, the strongest human in fact. Unlike some of the Z Warriors, he was also in the Boo Saga (can't let saiyajin do everything) and stopped a fireball before it killed Gohan.
Yamcha!
The roving desert bandit-warrior and former boyfriend to a teenage Bulma/Buruma. Yamcha originally appeared in Dragonball along with his assistant and best friend, Puar/Puuaru, but he shows up quite a bit in Dragonball Z as well. He is killed in the Saiyan Saga by a Kamikaze Saibamen. Later in the show, he is nearly killed by Android 20/Dr. Gero, and after that he doesn't fight all too much.
