opintrng2: yes
opintrng: I think the training we received for the Combat Recovery
team was above adequate with Firest Sergeant Force, repelling with
1st Force Recon at Hansen and Schwab, handling all those different
weapons and how to fire the machine gun from the chopper at targets on Okinawa.
volcombat1: no
prospect: Nothing really, something I believe I had to do as a Marine
family: I don't think they fret over it, something that I had to do.
whereentervn: September 1964
impressionvn: The smell of it when I got off the plane like a huge
banjo ditch. No particular feeling for the people other than we
were in their country. I thought the ARVN in general were chicken
shit and couldn't be trusted. No particular feeling for the VC other
than they were trying to kill us. The political situation was a
mess, corrupt and Vietnamese making a lot of money out of the war.
impressionusmc: I never served with a better bunch of guys that
I did with this squadron. I liked the French Quarters that we first
had and even the tents we finally moved in at the end of the runway,
maybe because I was young, but anywhere with these guys was great with me.
weapons: M-14 and Colt .45
aircftfly: UH-34D, as a member of the Combat Recovery Team and a maching gunner
mission: I am not sure when and where was my most memorable mission
because according to my SRB I had 44 of them and I flew with almost
everyone on our team but the one that stands out in my mind was
when we went out to Tam Ky and guarded a downed UH-34D during the
night, set up a defense perimeter, watch the ARVNs that was with
us sleep during the night, even while there was a fire fight going on close by.
whomission: I don't recall who I was with, but I remember that Watson
who was on the team, got wrote up by Lt. Wilson for falling asleep while we were there.
happenmission: We guarded that Chopper at Provincial Headquarters
at Tam Ky and they had the lights on us all night long showing our
position that we set up, never could get them to turn it off, a
few fire fights going on while we were there but never took any
incoming which surprise the shit out of us that was there. And
when it was morning saw a bunch of black pajamas Vietnamese, which
we never knew if they were the good guys or the bad guys.
terrain: Mountains, jungle and more jungle and clear and well lit at the mission site
weather: Clear, Clear, Clear
msnequip: M-60, M-14 and Colt .45
contact: no
exfire: no
usmchit1: no
acfthit1: no
comment: I have very little photos of our tour over there but lots
of memories of things that I experience that would be too numerous
to even try and put them in this little space but good or bad of
when I was there I will always treasure them as part of my life
that will be with me till the day that I die. Semper Fi, Jeff Aveiro
