The AFL last night began an investigation into a racial vilification case between Melbourne forward David Schwarz and his former teammate St Kilda's Sean Charles, the Age newspaper reported today.
AFL investigations officer Rick Lewis last night interviewed Charles and is expected to interview Schwarz today.
Schwarz and Charles are expected to attend mediation this week after the Melbourne forward alleged Charles called him a 'racist'.
Schwarz is believed to have reported Charles to a field umpire during Sunday's match at Colonial Stadium.
The umpire then laid a notice of investigation to the AFL.
However, it is believed that Charles had claimed that earlier in the match he had been racially vilified by Schwarz and that Charles took offence.
Demons officials and Schwarz last night said they could not comment on the matter, as players and officials were bound to a confidentiality agreement on racial vilification charges.
