The Sugar Bowl is a postseason annual American college football played on January 1 in New Orleans , Louisiana . The Nokia Super Bowl came into being after encountering many adversities, including a World War. The idea of starting this amateur athletic event was conceived in 1927 by Colonel James M. Thomson, publisher of the New Orleans Item and Fred J. Digby who wrote sports column for that newspaper. The admirers of the sport also gave their full support in promoting the Sugar Bowl Football Classic by raising a sum of $30,000 by subscribing the newspaper. The history of Sugar Bowl holds the prominent picture of community spirit and plans that were influential in spreading the name and fame of New Orleans world over. Fred Digby addressed this mid-winter sport as “Sugar Bowl.” He even outlined the calendar of the sports of the still dream game. This idea of starting mid-winter sport also caught the fancy of the civic and political leaders. They started carrying out negotiations to discuss the prospects and potential of the game.

n January 1934, Warren V. Miller and Joseph M. Cousins (head of a citizens committee) showed an inclination to put the plan into action. The Managing Editor of the “The Item” suggested that Miller and Cousins groups should merge and should promote the plan with the assistance of other civic, professional and athletic clubs. On 15 th February 1934 , Fred Digby's dream eventually materialized. The New Orleans Mid-Winter Sports Association was formally organized under a constitution and statutes were written by Mr. Miller. Warren V. Miller was appointed as the president of the association. Joseph M. Cousins became the vice-president, Harry W. Fletcher the treasurer and T. Semmes Ranlett the secretary. For several months the enrollment for membership was kept open. Some of those who actively participated in the introductory discussions became skeptical and lost their interest. After one year the rolls were closed and limited to the original 39 organizers. Though the confederacy came into being but its future was in dark because of the many hurdles it faced. But President Miller and Digby remained consistent and continued to encourage the people through their writings.

Currently, the Nokia Sugar Bowl is considered as one of the most distinctive and victorious athletic accomplishment in the account of American sports. The Mid-Winter Sports Association, from its beginning has been free from any political mess, since it was predetermined in the statutes that the confederacy will serve as a voluntary, non-profit civic organization whose members will serve without any compensation. It was also encoded that the raised fund will be kept aside for charitable, religious or educational purposes. From 1935 to 1974 the game was played in the Tulane Stadium, also known as “The Sugar Bowl.” In 1975, The Super Bowl shifted to the Louisiana Superdome and became the first major bowl game to be played indoors. From 1987-1995 USF&G Financial Services held the naming rights. In 1995, Nokia cellular telephones of Finland became The Super Bowl's corporate title sponsor. The Super Bowl is one of the official members of the Bowl Championship Series and hosts one of the top three post-season matches.
