“Purely Committed” Plans Banquet for College Women
by Derika Brendsel
If you had to describe Generation X in one word, “committed” would not be the first adjective that comes to mind. However, a group of local college students is proving to be just that. “Purely Committed” made up of nine Westmont College women and committees from the tree other Santa Barbara colleges, is a group devoted to speaking out about the importance of abstinence for this generation. Currently, they are organizing and fund-raising for a unique April 20th event they are calling the “One Knight Only Banquet.” The place? The Radisson Hotel on Cabrillo Boulevard. The goal? To educate college-aged women about the consequences of premarital sex and the benefits of abstinence, and to encourage them towards a memorable commitment to remain pure until marriage.
In addition to an elegant dinner catered by the Radisson, the lineup of speakers for the night includes Kirk Cameron, famous for his role on the TV series “Growing Pains,” and 1999 Miss Wisconsin, Mary-Louise Kurey. Also on the program is a special video message from “Promised Land” actor, Austin O’Brien, and performances by local and nation recording artists. A major emphasis of the evening will be on what’s been called “secondary virginity.” Many young women, including some of the Purely Committed core team members, have already given in to the pressure of sexual temptation and experienced heart-breaking physical and emotional consequences. The banquet is an opportunity for young women to start over by making a new commitment to purity and finding solidarity with those who are making the same promise to themselves and their future husbands.
The conclusion of The One Knight Only Banquet will be a sunset commitment ceremony at East Beach where banquet attendees can light candles and sign cards as an expression of their decision to remain sexually abstinent until marriage.
