Currently in Brazil, land transportation is the most effective way of traveling. Around
85% of Brazil's people and products are transported by road. There is constant
construction being done trying to connect the remote areas of Brazil to the coast. The
railway network is small in comparison to the highway development. Air travel is vastly
popular; it can be compared to North America. Several routes connect major cities to
remote areas of the jungle. Brazil has 10 international airports that are fully operational
and offer high standards of comfort and efficiency. Brazil is linked by air to all of the
continents in the world; it also has the second largest fleet of private airplanes in the
world. Over the past 3 decades Brazil's transportation has improved, but more roads
and railways are needed. There is always the constant debate though of where to put
the roads because they could risk extinction of the rainforest and the native lifestyle.
The flip side is that the roads are needed to enable economic development and for the
rural poor to access better facilities and jobs.
