DC TALK merged as a group of Toby McKeehan, Michael Tait, and Kevin Smith in the mid 1980’s. Before the group merged Toby had been traveling around the Washington DC area doing rapping performances while attending college at Jerry Falwell’s Liberty University where he soon met Michael Tait. After Kevin joined they were known as “DC TALK and the One Way Crew” When they signed a contract with ForeFront Records in 1989, they shortened there name to “DC TALK”. ForeFront Records promoted “D.C.” to stand for “Decent. Christian”
They released “DC TALK” , their 1st and self titled album in 1989. And in that year they relocated to Tennessee. They released “Nu Thang” shortly after in 1990. In 1991 they toured with Michael W. Smith to gain a larger audience. In 1992 DC TALK’s music took a sharp change from strictly rap to more of a pop/rock sound with their 3rd CD, “Free At Last”. They went platinum with this CD. The CD held #1 for 34 weeks in CCM’s Billboard. With the release of their 4th CD, "Jesus Freak", they changed yet again their music and their name from capital “DC” to lower case “dc”. With this CD, Chirstian music sales have never gotten a higher record for most sales on a CD. And still to this day it holds it’s record. The album went platinum along with “Free At Last”.
In late 1996 dc talk signed a new deal with Virgin Records to get a more secular audience. In 1997 they released a video and CD called “Welcome to the Freak Show” which had live songs from their Jesus Freak tour. They released their 5th full CD in 1998 called, “Supernatural” and in 6 months it went Gold. They went on tour again calling it “The Supernatural Experence”(they later came out with a video for the tour also) , and in the fall they released their 1st book called, “Jesus Freaks”. The book tells stories about many Marytrs and their crys out for the world today. In 2000 the guys took a short break for relaxation and family time. There were many rumors that they were breaking up. Even a few rumors that Kevin was leaving. But when dc talk released their CD, "Intermisson: the Greatest Hits” in late 2000, the rumors disappeared.
The three agreed to take time off from the group to work on solo projects that were planned to be done sometime in 2001. The last "dc Talk" cd to come out as a band is "Solo EP", it has 2 of each of the artist solo songs on the cd plus an added bonus song "40". Shortly after, Michaels cd, "Empty" released July 3, 2001. Followed by Kevins cd, "Stereotype Be", which released August 28, 2001. Last but not least Tobys cd was released November 6, 2001, the title of the cd is "Momentum". The three have just finished up there "Solo" tour this past winter, after it being post poned by Kevin from the fall. They are currently separating for the summer to do their own Solo concerts.
They are all currently working on a second Solo project while Toby and Mike continue touring in the fall of 2002.
