Chapter Eleven

LATER THAT DAY... at noon or sometime around there

Marian opened her eyes, and looked around. Where was she? She had a headache. Brian was watching her. Oh, she was at Brian's house. She felt like shit and remembered that Glyn and AJ had had a fight.

"Hi." Marian smiled at Brian.

"Hi. You didn't have to sleep on the table all night. There are beds and stuff... You okay?"

"Okay. Thanks for saving me from the roadside last night." Marian forced a smile despite her headache. The phone rang and Brian got it.

"It's for you!" He gave the phone to Marian.

"Mari?" Glyn was still at Alec's apartment.

"Glyn! Where are you?"

"Alec's." Glyn said simply.

"AJ called last night. Well, this morning. Twice." Marian informed her.

"Did he?" Glyn sounded disinterested.

"What did he do?" Marian wondered.

"He just... I don't know. He didn't really do anything. He just asked who Owen and everyone else was. I don't know why it made me mad..." Glyn felt really crappy. First she walked out on AJ for basically no reason, and to top it off it was her fault that Seth was mad with Alec.

"I'm sure he deserved it." Marian said soothingly.

"Yeah, whatever." Glyn sighed. "I know where we can live. Alec has a friend who's moving, and his apartment is big enough for at least two people. The rent's not cheap, exactly, but it isn't that bad. Alec said he'd help out and stuff if we wanted. We can pay him back." Glyn knew she was babbling.

"That's great! Where is it?"

"I don't know." Glyn replied truthfully. "I gotta go. I need to leave Alec alone. I'll call you later."

"Okay, see ya Glyn."

"Bye Mari." Glyn hung up.

"Hey Alec? I should leave now. Thanks so much for letting me sleep on your couch. Have you talked to Seth?"

"No... I think he'll be okay. This kind of thing's happened before with him." Alec shrugged. "Anytime you need a couch-"

"No! I won't bother you anymore. Are you sure things are gonna work out with Seth? I'm so sorry. This is all my fault." Glyn sighed.

"Absolutely. By the way, did you get a haircut?"

"Well. Yeah, I guess I did." Glyn pulled her fingers through her tangled hair. "Seeya Al." She waved at him and left, wondering where she would go. She wasn't quite ready to go talk to AJ yet. Glyn decided that aimless wandering sounded like a good activity for the day, at least until she was ready to go beg a couch for the night from someone else. She wondered where the apartment Alec had told her about was. Glyn sighed and started down the street.

AJ couldn't believe his luck. He'd found Glyn and had been following her around for about a half hour, walking around the city. He wondered if she was actually going anywhere. Probably not.

Glyn felt like someone was watching her. 'Stop it, you're being paranoid. No one wants to look at you,' she thought. She ducked into an alley and hid behind some trash cans, just to be safe. 'Yeah, no one will look for you in a trash can.'

Where had Glyn gone? One second she was there, and the next, he'd lost her. AJ sighed and kept walking. He didn't see the alley she had hidden in, and walked right past it.

Glyn choked when AJ went walking by her obliviously. Why was he following her? She accidentally knocked over one of the trash cans, and it fell against another, which fell against another, creating a lovely domino effect. Muttering curses under her breath, Glyn decided to run for it, and started sprinting down the sidewalk in the opposite direction AJ had gone.

AJ heard the trash cans fall over, and he'd turned around in time to see Glyn running away down the street. "Shit! GLYN!" He started running after her.

"Damnit!" Glyn yelled as she ran into someone. She fell to the sidewalk and so did the other person.

"Fuck you!" Nick rubbed his head and glared at Glyn.

"Oh, look, it's Prettyboy Carter." Glyn muttered sarcastically. "Much as I'd love to stay and chat, I must be going." Glyn started to stand up, but Nick had a different idea.

"BARNABY!!" he bellowed, and Glyn felt strong hands on her arms.

"Get OFF!" Glyn struggled and decided to bite one of the offending hands.

"Ow!" AJ let go of her and held his hand gingerly. "Why did you do that?"

"Because I thought you were Barnaby. But considering the circumstances I probably would have bitten even if I knew it was you. Why were you following me?"

"I didn't mean to. I was walking around and I saw you. And why were you" (he looked at Nick) "-following me? Or were you following Glyn?"

"I wasn't!" Nick scowled at him. "Me and Barnaby were out shopping and I was just walking down the sidewalk and this .... girl ran into me."

"Aww. Did you have fun shopping with Barnaby?" Glyn smiled mockingly at him.

"BARNABY! Where ARE you? Do something about her!!" Nick yelled. Barnaby had disappeared. "Oh, yeah. He went to get the car. We can wait for him."

"Wait for him?! So he can put me in jail again? Yeah right!" Glyn began walking fast in the other direction. AJ glanced fleetingly at Nick and followed her.

"AJ!! Come back! Stop it!" Nick whined. "BARNABY!"

"Glyn! Glyn, wait. We need to talk!" AJ pleaded, catching up with her. Glyn stopped and faced him.

"Okay. Talk."

"That's not what I said! I said we should talk."

"You said we need to talk. That's different." Glyn didn't feel very cooperative. AJ looked at the tooth marks in his hand.

"Can we go somewhere? Please?"

"Why?" AJ looked somewhat sheepish. "Oh, I see. You're afraid you might get mobbed by some rabid little preteen girls. Fine."

"Okay. We're not that far from my house."

"I guess we could go there," Glyn said doubtfully. "I need to brush my hair." They walked a few blocks to AJ's building. Britni glared at Glyn as they walked past.

"Hi Britni," AJ said.

"Why do you always say hi to Britni?" Glyn wondered, not trying to be quiet.

"I don't know," AJ replied absentmindedly. Neither of them said anything while they were in the elevator.

"Please enter the passcode. Please enter the passcode. Please enter-"

"Fuck!! SHUT UP!!! I don't remember the passcode." AJ looked miserably at the wall.

"54678," Glyn recited and smiled.

"That's IT!" AJ happily punched in the numbers, finally silencing the voice.

"What happened in here?" Glyn demanded, looking around AJ's apartment worriedly. There seemed to be beer and broken glass everywhere. There was a nasty stain on one wall by a window.

"Umm... Nothing at all." AJ shrugged.

"Of course. Um...." Glyn stepped carefully around some broken glass and sat on a couch.

"How's Alec?" AJ tried to sound friendly.

"Alec... Um. THere's something I shoudl tell you." Glyn wondered if Marian had told AJ about Alec.

"What?" AJ remembered how Marian had laughed when he'd said something about Alec.

"Alec's gay" Glyn said simply. "Just thought you might like to know that." AJ was relieved.

"That's .... nice."

"Yeah, I guess." Glyn shrugged. "I'm sorry I got mad at you last night. I really shouldn't have and I was just being stupid and I'm a moron and I'm really sorry and-"

"No, none of it was your fault! I'm the moron," AJ insisted.

"No, I am." Glyn smiled jokingly.

"No, me!"

"I'm gonna brush my hair." Glyn stood up and went to hunt down a brush.
