CONSOLE DESIGN
Megalith! The X-Box is, undeniably, massive.
And what Microsoft call the 'jewel' in the centre of the machine is in fact a sickening shade of green. Microsoft's entire marketing campaign seems to be built around this colour, God help us. However, the console itself works in the respect that, like a VCR, it doesn't look out of place under your telly. It 'blends in', and when you're playing that's all that really matters. It's also very sturdy- solid buttons, strong CD tray... it's all there.
The controller has been universally slagged.
Admittedly the analogue sticks and triggers are the best of the three consoles, but overall it's fat, very ugly, and the face buttons are extremely uncomfortable causing in-game confusion and/or wrist pain. Your choice. |

OTHER NOTES
X-Box's success is difficult to predict. With its
Western overtones, it's not likely to do well in Japan- a culture familiar with its 'home brands' of Sony and Nintendo. America could be Microsoft's main selling area- suggested by the American sports titles spewing out of the developing grinder. In Europe X-Box will be released before Gamecube and Microsoft will do everything in their power to outsell Nintendo's little console, although many gamers already prefer the 'Cube as it is £100 cheaper and has the Nintendo seal of approval. Microsoft's potential financial input could be critical to the success of the X-Box. |
