Dr Gero also known as Android 20 begins his career as a famous scientist employed by The Red Ribbon Army. Although his role in The Red ribbon Army is entirely unknown until Dragonball Z when Trunks shows up and explains. Dr. Gero’s specialty is robotics and his brilliant invention skill leads him into developing A.I. (Artificial Intelligence).
In the beginning, most of the Androids he created are so-called “failures” and none of them are functioning properly because they possess the ability to choose right and wrong, hence their aware of their own existence. Eventually, when Goku infiltrates Muscle Tower (Red Ribbon Army Headquarters), The Red Ribbon Army needs more soldiers, Dr Gero has no other choice and deploys Android 8. Although Androids 1-7 are never seen Android 8 resembles Frankenstein‘s monster and instead of attacking Goku he befriends him and helps conquer Muscle Tower. For many years this is the last we see of any Androids. Dr. Gero sees little success with Android 8. He heads back to his secret lab, creating machine after machine each stronger then the one before to take his vengeance out on Goku for obliterating The Red Ribbon Army. After that to conquer the universe. In a few years time, he has created Android’s 13-19 also turning himself into an Android, by transplanting his brain into an Artificial body, thus becoming Android 20.
Dr. Gero dealt mostly with two types of Androids, Mechanical, and Biotechnological types. Mechanical types are robots constructed entirely of machine parts like Android 16,19 and 20. Biotechnological types are part man and part machine like Android 8,17and 18 But in Cell’s case, he is entirely biological. Android 19 was fit for fighting but his main purpose was to transfer Dr. Gero’s brain into the artificial body so he could live beyond human years. Dr. Gero knew no bounds when he created tiny bug-like machines that take blood samples and watched the strongest heroes and villains while they were battling on Earth. With these samples Dr. Gero created his last and final creation known as Cell or Android 21.
After Dr. Gero started the process of creating Cell he than sealed Cell in a secret underground section of his lab to let his computer finish the process that would take 24 years. Dr. Gero and Android 19 surfs from the lab to test out Dr. Gero’s new body this is were he runs into Goku and the other Z worriers after Android 19 is defeated by Vegeta. Dr. Gero runs for his lab to release Android 17 and 18. Dr. Gero is betrayed and his spark is finally extinguished when he is beheaded and his head crushed by Android 17. After the death of Dr Gero, the main computer in his lab continues to function, and takes on Dr Gero's role to finish the most powerful Android ever (Cell). In hell Dr. Gero allies with Dr. Myuu to create Artificial 17 and escapes to Earth, There he is betrayed and killed by Super 17 upon Dr. Myuu's orders.
