The War

For a while Natasha just sat. Sat and watched as the fight grew more intense. Anger was bubbling up inside her, like lava waiting to explode from the top of a volcano. But she held it down. She couldn’t interfere. She just watched as Vegeta kept on battling Glycander. The Saiyan prince’s opponent was strong, and having already killed Goku and the rest of the Z force, Vegeta was all the Earth had left. She watched more. Vegeta was weakening. It wasn’t visible in his fighting, but in his eyes she could see the pain run through his body, with every move he dodged, with every attack he used, and suddenly it happened. It was unexpected, a move never before seen in this world. It sent the Saiyan flying. As he lay on the floor, she could see the defeat in his eyes. His Saiyan pride had been hurt once more. The three hour fight seemed for nothing, if he was going to die like this. She watched the monster start to power up once more, his finishing move being made ready. That was it. Natasha couldn’t take it any longer. She leapt from hiding, screaming as she did. The words she said were unclear in her memory, her thoughts and actions blurred by emotions. Soon she found herself running in front of the oncoming attack. She couldn’t let this happen. She leapt forward, stopping the attack from hitting Vegeta. She let out a scream of pain as the attack went through her body. It was unbearable, like having molten metal grafted onto your skin, piercing everything with its hot fury. The world started to dim. She could hear Vegeta’s voice, she could hear Glycander’s laugh. She let the world fade, perhaps this was the end?

Her eyelids fluttered open, bright light shining in her face, blinding her. How long had it been since that thought fatal attack? She managed to open her eyes, and was glad to see Vegeta’s face, looking at her, concerned. She pulled him towards her, so glad to know he was alright. She looked behind him, over his shoulder. She could see fire all around, the once green landscape now red, stripped bare of all that was living. She was in a cave, once more alone with her love. She pulled back to look Vegeta in the eye. "Did we win??" she asked, looking deep for a true answer. Vegeta pulled her back towards him, holding her close. "Yeah." He replied, a smile on his face, even though a tear trickled down his cheek, one of the few he had shed in his lifetime. "We won this time." He held her closer, turning her eyes away from the Armageddon sweeping through the land behind them. He knew the war was over. But for now they were just together. Together until the end. Earth was gone. But they had won the war.
