The Prince of the planet Vegita escaped death during the destruction of his home planet by being a favorite of Furiza. His father attacked Furiza to gain independance and was killed at this time.
Vegita was the most powerful of the Saiyans during the period before he battled Goku on Earth. At the age of 12 he achieved the status of being a first class saiyan, a title only held by the most powerful warriors of their race. In light of this it was no surprise when he became a SSJ following Goku, the third to complete such a feat. His powers, however, unlike Goku's were not used for a good cause and although he settles down be side the rest of Z, he will always have the same cold heart.
