Goku is a full Saiyan. At the beginning of DBZ he was one of the only four Saiyans left alive.Goku's father, Bardock, was killed by Furiza when the evil king destroyed the planet Vegita. His mother is never mentioned in the series. As a small child Goku was sent to the planet Earth to transform and obliviate it at the sight of the full moon. However, one day he fell and hit his head, causing him to forget his true nature and so was raises by Kamesenin and eventually trained. He then married Chi-Chi and had their first sun Gohan. He became the strongest fighter in the universe and now spends his time fighting off evil. It was not until later in the Majin Saga that his second son Goten was born.
Although thought of as only a third class Saiyan, he became the first Saiyan in the series to become a Super-Saiyan-Jin, a feat accomplished only once before. Even though he wasn't the first to reach form 2, (Gohan stole this title during the Cell Saga), he was first in forms 3 and 4. In fact he is the only Saiyan able to reach form 4 using his own power, (Vegita needed energy from a special stone to reach that level).
