Looking at his watch, he decided it was late enough in the morning to call. If AJ was still asleep, well, too bad. He waited patiently as the phone rang on the other end and then the voice, heavy with sleep, picked up.
“This had better be damned good to wake me at this hour of the morning.”
Howie chuckled, “It’s almost noon, ‘J’. Get your ass out of bed.”
“Hell no!! I’m perfectly happy right where I am. What’s up?”
“I need you to do me a favor tomorrow.”
“I need you to take Sarah to her doctor’s appointment.”
“What? You’re gonna miss a doctor’s appointment?!” questioned AJ in mock surprise.
“Just DO NOT go there,” growled Howie. “I couldn’t get out of this business appointment. Kevin and I have to fly to Huntsville about this entertainment complex and Sarah has a check up tomorrow.”
“No problem. What time?”
“The appointment is at two but you need to get there kinda early so she doesn’t take off on her own. She promised me she’d ask Becca or one of my sisters to take her and so far, she hasn’t.”
“Maybe she’ll do it later today,” offered AJ but he knew that wasn’t going to happen.
“Yeah, right!” snorted Howie. “And Nick’s gonna go back to his natural color!!! You know my wife as well as I do. When she gets it in her head to do something, she’s going to do it. Hell, I’ve had to hide her keys to keep her from coming into town.”
AJ laughed knowing exactly what Howie was talking about and he knew the order for complete bed rest was killing Sarah. “When are you leaving?”
“Early tomorrow morning. Our flight leaves at six in the morning so we can be back before supper.”
“Tell you what. I’ll come spend the night so I can get up and get ‘Baby Tigger’ ready for school. I’ll just bring Sarah with me when I drop Jess off at school and she can hang out here to give her a change of scenery.”
“I’d REALLY appreciate that, ‘J’. I hate having to miss this but there’s nothing I can do.”
“Is Sarah okay with this?”
“No, not really but she’s not telling me any different. It’s the ONLY appointment I’ve missed.”
“One appointment isn’t gonna kill ya, ‘D’. I’ll see you for dinner. What can I bring?”
“How about cheese steak hoagies…you know how Sarah likes them.”
“Yeah, I do. Want cheese fries too?”
“You know it. I’m headed home to smooth the ruffled feathers.”
“What about Jesse?”
“She’s already at home. No school today and I’m SURE she’s driving Sarah nuts by now.”
AJ laughed knowing Howie was probably right. “I’ll see you around six then.”
“Thanks, ‘J’….for everything.”
“Glad to do it.”
With the connection broken, Howie finished what he was doing and cleared his desk. He had a date with his wife.
