Global Destruction Reviews

Metal Side (poland)

Because I found former Insanity's members in Poverty's line-up, this band called my attention at once. Insanity was one of the most interesting thrash/death metal projects of the 80's and 90's, that's why I hoped that the musicians, who had such interesting musical biography would impress metal world again. They didn't disappoint. If you want to know if Poverty continues Insanity's style, my answer won't be precise: to some degree it does, and to some degree it doesn't. That's old-school death/thrash with the roots in brutal metal from the 80's and that's the common element with Insanity. You will hear some stylistic similarities as well. On the other hand, Poverty has new ideas to offer and they are significant enough to say that the new band goes in own direction. The compositions from "Global Destruction" are very fast with sudden tempo changes. They can remind you of early Sadus or even early Morbid Angel (the vocals) but all such comparisons are a bit dangerous for they can mislead someone. I've been listening lately to old Brazilian thrash metal (Vulcano, Sextrash), and it is another possible comparison: again, not very precise. Poverty doesn't complicate its music too much. The aggression and speed are most significant features, so don't expect complex, epic songs, but radical displays of thrash metal power. I really like such approach. I have already underlined that the roots of Poverty's style are in the 80's. It could mean that it's old-fashioned music. I would not say this. Although it is old school thrash/death metal, it is also a good proposal for people, who want to hear something fresh. Not too many bands want to use these elements of thrash/death metal heritage, which are the foundation of Poverty's style. California's band doesn't follow the trends, and it should be a good lesson for younger musicians: if you want to try something new, the past is definitely worth a creative continuation. Metal Observer (review)

POVERTY, a rather puzzling name for a Brutal Death Metal band, but irregardless, made a series of choices before the song writing process began and somewhere in that process, they opted to leave originality out of the equation. More often than not, this can be a band’s greatest shortcoming and although it’s definitely not to their advantage, other decisions POVERTY made help them overcome this. The decision you ask? They decided to write some killer songs. It’s nothing that blows me away and certainly nothing revolutionary, but sometimes things just hit you a certain way. Each track on this disc is pretty much what you would expect from a Brutal Death Metal band; it hits you hard, it hits you fast, there’s plenty of great catchy riffs, but there’s a little something extra, something that puts them above the rest of the pack and to the side of the greats, so that when you see POVERTY, you know that they’re not a revolutionary band, but that they’re a great band to just headbang to. It’s odd, normally I’d be a lot harsher on a band like this, but sometimes things just hit you a certain way. METAL-OBSERVER.COM
