< TEASER >
SCENE #1: [UNKNOWN]
[Unknown fingers punch "4", "9" and "7" into an unknown keypad. Five asterisks
show indicating there were five digits in the passcode with the following
response: "Passcode authentication complete / Passcode accepted / to palm
scan". An unknown palm is scanned. Response shows: "Palm scan complete / 236
unique match points / Positive match confirmed / Permission log written /
proceed to retinal scan".]
[Unknown feet walk down an unknown hallway. A man walks up to a panel where his
eye is scanned. "Scan complete". The man inserts a key into the large vault-
like door. It opens and he proceeds down the stairs. The white-haired man
pulls out an envelope from his pocket and approaches a nearby guard.]
CAPTAIN: I have an urgent communication to deliver to Dr. Nordlinger.
NAVY SEAL: I can deliver the communication.
CAPTAIN: I was asked to confirm and verify he received the communiqué and
report back...
NAVY SEAL: That's not the proper procedure.
CAPTAIN: ...Report back Dr. Nordlinger's acknowledgment of the communiqué.
(The unmarked door behind the guard opens and a man in a lab coat walks out.)
DR. NORDLINGER: What's going on here?
(While the door is open, THE CAPTAIN glimpses through the open door to a lab-
like facility. There is a large screen on the wall showing activity on a
cellular level. There are also as far as we can see, about a half dozen other
lab technicians in there, lots of test tubes and microscopes. DR. NORDLINGER
reaches behind him and closes the door obscuring THE CAPTAIN's (and our)
vision.)
NAVY SEAL: There's some confusion as to the proper procedure Dr. Nordlinger.
CAPTAIN: I have a communication for you.
(THE CAPTAIN hands the envelope to DR. NORDLINGER. On the lip of the envelope
in red letters is "TOP SECRET". The de-coded communique reads: "CCH eG BCOM /
EMERGENCY STOP / RETURN TO OPERATIONS / BASE DIRECTLY STOP".)
DR. NORDLINGER: Communication acknowledged and confirmed, captain. We're
returning to base.
(THE CAPTIN nods and leaves. There are "Dangerous" and "Hazardous Materials"
signs on the wall near the CAPTAIN's
BAMFORD: Captain ...
CAPTAIN: Officer Bamford ... prepare to transmit to operations commander.
BAMFORD: Transmit what, sir? Sir... what is the communication?
CAPTAIN: We're coming in.
(THE CAPTAIN takes his position behind the wheel. The camera moves outward ...
from the CAPTAIN ... out from the portal ... of the sea vessel, the Valor
Victor, a WW2 Merchant Marines vessel ... in the middle of the moonlit ocean ...

NARRATOR: Previously, on the x-files...
[CARL WOMUS' car crashing through the bridge barrier and falling into the river.
CARL WORMUS freeing himself from the car and starting to swim toward the
surface. McMAHON reaching up and holding WOMUS down. REYES opening the
unmarked envelope and pulling out CARL WOMUS' obit.]
DOGGETT: Deceased's name is CARL WORMUS Deputy Administrator for the EPA.
Somebody put his obituary under our noses.
[KERSH and DOGGETT in the elevator.]
KERSH: Have you found any incriminating evidence on me yet?
[REYES sipping from her martini glass with FOLLMER next to her at the bar.]
FOLLMER: I'd heard you and John Doggett were tight.
REYES: Whatever you may think about him, Brad, he's not a fool.
[MCMAHON breaking the surface of the water tank. McMahon walking out of the
elevator without a second glance to REYES who follows the mysterious woman's
movements.]
SCULLY: Who is she?
REYES: I've never seen her before this morning. Now I've seen her twice.
[DOGGETT (to Scully). Knowle Rohrer driving car (*Existence). BILLY MILES
swinging and chopping off Buddy Haskell's head (seems like a favorite picture of
theirs from *Essence). SCULLY reassuring herself and DOGGETT.]
DOGGETT (to SCULLY): Knowle Rohrer told me your pregnancy was a result of a
government cloning experiment to try and create a super soldier.
SCULLY: My baby is fine.
[WILLIAM moving the mobile. SCULLY waking up from her nap and moving toward the
bassinet.]
REYES: I know what you're afraid of. That there's something wrong with your
baby.
[DOGGETT leafing through the files and pulls out one "Chloramine Base T-4".
DOGGETT and SKINNER running from FOLLMER.
FOLLMER leisurely following after the two men.]
DOGGETT: There's tons of files on chloramine here.
SKINNER: Grab the files and go.
FOLLMER: Agent Doggett?
[DOGGETT is underwater in the water tank directly in front of FOLLMER who is
looking for him up above. Doggett is grabbed from below and pulled under.
it's SHANNON McMAHON. Doggett clearly surprised as he's pulled under.]
<>
FOLLMER: Doggett?
[FOLLMER walks above the same tank DOGGETT is in. He looks around. DOGGETT is
struggling to break the surface and to break the hold of the person pulling him
under. McMAHON's hold is secure. The last of DOGGETT's breath leaves him. Up
above, FOLLMER takes one last look at the stillness of the water tank and walks
away just as DOGGETT's air bubbles break the surface.]
[Below, DOGGET is out of air. McMAHON swims up to him and gives him hers.]
SCENE #2:
FBI HEADQUARTERS
10:21 AM
(REYES walks into the office. SKINNER looks up at her from the chair he's
sitting in. FOLLMER is pacing his office floor and reading a file.)
REYES: Sorry I'm late.
FOLLMER: Have a seat, Agent Reyes. (REYES closes the door and takes the seat
next to SKINNER.) Agent Reyes, I thought we might have a little chat. Mr.
Skinner here has been trying to help me put together the pieces of your x-files
investigation.
REYES: Can we cut the crap, Brad?
FOLLMER: I don't know. Can we? There's a lot of crap to cut through.
SKINNER: Agent Reyes ... you probably want to zip it and try to cooperate.
FOLLMER: Like it or not I'm now charged with the task of reining you in.
REYES: Reining us in?
FOLLMER: Uh-huh.
REYES: For what?
FOLLMER: Unauthorized autopsies; breaking and entering into a state water
facility; willful misuse of your positions.
REYES: I really don't want to go into any of this without my partner here.
FOLLMER: Your partner. Your so-called partner who's running this circus, is
right now nowhere to be found.
REYES: What are you doing, Brad?
FOLLMER: Giving you and Mr. Skinner the opportunity to put a nice spin on this
mess that Doggett's making.
SKINNER: Agent Reyes, if you're not going to zip it, at least recognize that
he's the only one who can help you.
REYES: We were given a tip we believe leads to a larger conspiracy.
FOLLMER: A conspiracy. Involving the FBI.
REYES: John Doggett and I are running a legitimate investigation into the FBI.
Neither one of us feels...
FOLLMER: Agent Reyes I'm trying to help you keep your job ... but that's not
going to happen if you insist on chasing shadows ... chasing conspiracies.
REYES: How do you know there isn't one?
FOLLMER: You're taking on... the entire FBI here, Monica. This witch hunt...
isn't going to expose anything... but you. That is unless you distance yourself
from John Doggett.
(REYES stands up and walks to the door.)
FOLLMER: What are you doing?
REYES: I'm distancing myself, Brad, from you. From your political games. You
just want to get John Doggett.
FOLLMER: You're making a big mistake here.
REYES: Yeah, I seem to make one every time I walk in your door.
SCENE #3: [DOGGETT'S RESIDENCE]
(DOGGETT wakes up, coughing. He gasps for air and realizes that he's not alone
in his bedroom. )
McMAHON: Lie back, John. It's okay.
DOGGETT: What the hell is this?
McMAHON: It's Shannon. Shannon McMahon. We were together in bravo company,
USMC. You were trying to contact me.
DOGGETT: What the hell are you doing here now?
(DOGGETT coughs.)
McMAHON: Your lungs were full of water.
DOGGETT: You pulled me under.
McMAHON: I did what I had to.
DOGGETT: You held me down. I remember.
McMAHON: They would have caught you. They might have figured it out. What
you've started to figure out.
DOGGETT: What are you?
McMAHON: You know what I am. I'm the product of 50 years of military science.
The program your old friend Knowle Rohrer told you about. I'm a bio-engineered
combat unit. I have no weaknesses. I don't sleep. I can breathe underwater.
That's how I saved your life, John.
DOGGETT: How do you know what I know? What Knowle Roerer told me?
McMAHON: Knowle Rohrer and I were drafted right out of bravo company together.
We were ... Adam and Eve. The program's first. There are many more now.
DOGGETT: Knowle Rohrer is dead.
McMAHON: You can't kill us. We can't be killed. Knowle Rohrer and I are alike
in almost every way. The difference is I hate what I am.
DOGGETT: Why are you here telling me this?
McMAHON: The program's expanding in ways no one ever dreamed of. I need your
help to stop it, John.
DOGGETT: You need my help? What can I do?
McMAHON: Expose the deaths of those two men I killed. What they were doing...
DOGGETT: What were they doing?
McMAHON: Preparing the water supply.
DOGGETT: Preparing it for what?
SCENE #4:
PORT OF BALTIMORE
9:17 PM
(THE CAPTAIN walks into the room and pulls his coat from the hook and puts it
on. He's clearly going somewhere.)
BAMFORD: What are you doing, captain? Where are you going? We're under strict
orders not to leave ship.
CAPTAIN: Look at us. They've got us tied up at a civilian dock in Baltimore.
Why? I think they may be on to us.
BAMFORD: You're only drawing suspicion if they're not. You can't leave this
ship.
CAPTAIN: We can't risk waiting. We can't risk not making contact now. I'll be
back.
SCENE #5: [SCULLY'S APARTMENT]
(SCULLY is placing WILLIAM in his bassinet. There's a knock on the door. It's
SKINNER.)
SKINNER: Hi. I'm sorry about the hour.
SCULLY: I just put him down.
{SKINNER walks into the room and looks in on WILLIAM.)
SKINNER: I couldn't talk on the phone.
SCULLY: Well, what is it?
SKINNER: I was told ... to leave this alone. You and Mulder asked me to leave
it be. To let Mulder disappear. We were concerned for the safety of the baby
and for Mulder. Why am I risking that now? Why are you? Why are you getting
mixed up with Doggett's investigation?
SCULLY: Something happened ... with my baby.
SKINNER: What?
SCULLY: I can't explain it. It's, uh ... it's unexplainable. It's, um ...
it's not normal.
SKINNER: Whatever it is ... I think you've made a terrible mistake. Letting
Doggett pull you into this. I mean, he's hell-bent. And Agent Reyes is
following right in his tracks.
SCULLY: I need answers. I need to know. I can't just sit around wondering ...
SKINNER: If you can't tell me, then get to Mulder. Tell him what happened.
SCULLY: No. Mulder can't know. He can't be brought back into this. He can't
be brought back to the FBI. It's just too dangerous for him right now.
SKINNER: It's too dangerous for everyone.
SCENE #6: [BALTIMORE DOCK NEAR SHIP]
{THE CAPTAIN is on a pay phone near the ship. The phone rings.)
OPERATOR: The EPA employee you're trying to reach CARL WORMUS, is not
available. If you want to leave a voice-mail stay on the line.
(THE CAPTAIN hangs up and goes back to the ship. He walks back into the main
cabin and takes off his hat without looking. There is someone else in there.)
CAPTAIN (presuming it's BAMFORD): Something's wrong. Very wrong.
ROHRER: Sir... (THE CAPTAIN looks up and realizes that it's NOT BAMFORD.)
CAPTAIN: What is this? Where's Bamford?
ROHRER: Chief Petty Officer Bamford has been relieved of his post, sir. I'm
your new second in command.
SCENE #7: [SCULLY'S APARTMENT]
7:26 AM
(SCULLY is sitting on the couch burping WILLIAM. The phone rings.)
SCULLY: Hello.
REYES: Dana? I'm sorry if I woke you. It's Monica Reyes. Dana ... there's
something I think you really need to be aware of. Something you need to hear.
Something I'm not sure I believe.
SCULLY: I'm listening.
REYES: It's not me you need to hear it from.
(REYES hands the phone to DOGGETT.)
DOGGETT: Agent Scully ... we may have some answers for you about your baby.
(William is fussing.)
SCENE #8: [DOGGETT'S RESIDENCE]
(Knocking on door. DOGGETT opens the door. It's SCULLY.)
REYES: Dana, this is Shannon Mcmahon.
McMAHON: Hi.
(SCULLY looks at DOGGETT. She sits down in a chair nearest her.)
SCULLY: Let's start with the water.
McMAHON: Well, you're a scientist. You'll appreciate the science involved. A
new additive is being put in the water supply. It's called chloramine.
SCULLY: It's not news.
McMAHON: Well, let me say it's been reported but no one's asking questions yet.
SCULLY: And what should they be asking?
McMAHON: If you want to deliver something to everyone's home in America what
better way than through what's most taken for granted-- water.
SCULLY: Look, I've had my fair share of outrageous conspiracy theories, okay?
So cut the mystery crap and get to the science. Chloramine is just a substitute
for chlorine. You can drink it and it's harmless.
McMAHON: Unless someone were to go and quietly go and change its molecular
makeup.
SCULLY: Who and how?
McMAHON: I think you'd be more interested in why.
SCULLY: All right, then, why?
McMAHON: To prime a population to breed a generation of super soldiers.
SCULLY: By adding something to our water?
McMAHON: Something which promotes the mutation of offspring in fertilization,
in pregnancy.
SCULLY: What you're saying is absurd.
McMAHON: Is it? No more absurd than I am. I am a first-generation prototype.
Now they're seven stages advanced in the science which created me. To the point
where now they've successfully given birth to a super soldier from a mutated
egg.
SCULLY: How can we trust any of this? Or you? What you say you are?
McMAHON: We all have a standard mutation.
(McMAHON pulls her hair back and reveals the bump on the back of her neck for
SCULLY to see.)
SCENE #9: [THE VALOR VICTOR]
(The camera edits to the bumps on the back of KNOWLE ROHRER's neck.)
CAPTAIN: What are you looking at?
(KNOWLE ROHRER is looking at books. The CAPTAIN entered from behind him.
ROHRER turns around to address the CAPTAIN.)
ROHRER: Ship's logs.
(THE CAPTAIN moves forward to close the books.)
CAPTAIN: Those logs are classified.
ROHRER: As second in command I'm supposed to know the ship, sir ... in case
something should happen to you. (THE CAPTAIN moves to leave the quarters when
he is stopped by ROHRER.) What is the greater mission of this ship if I may
ask, sir?
CAPTAIN: I don't ask. We don't ask.
(Bell ringing. The CAPTAIN rushes out to see what the commotion is about.)
CAPTAIN: what's going on?
(A body is pulled from the ocean.)
MAN: That's Bamford. Officer Bamford.
(THE CAPTAIN turns to look at ROHRER.)
SCENE #10: [DOGGETT'S RESIDENCE]
(SCULLY pulls out her stethoscope to examine McMAHON. DOGGETT watches. McMAHON
turns to strip. DOGGETT leaves the room to wait with REYES in the living room.)
REYES: It doesn't make any sense.
DOGGETT: Yeah. Only it doesn't hold up to any argument, either, does it?
REYES: She drowned that man from the EPA. She's drowned two men. She says
they're part of the program.
DOGGETT: Two guys working to spike the Maryland State water supply.
REYES: So she killed them as a way of contacting you? You believe that?
DOGGETT: You saw that thing on her neck. You said you saw it before. I think
we're on to something here, Monica. It's freaky. It's mind-blowing. You got to
admit that. Come on.
REYES: I'm not doubting what she is only what she says she's doing.
(SCULLY walks in.)
DOGGETT: What? What'd you find?
SCULLY: Nothing. Nothing more than a small deformity of the spine.
Physically, she's seems absolutely normal. As normal as you or I.
DOGGETT: I don't believe this.
SCULLY: What don't you believe, Agent Doggett? I just examined her.
DOGGETT: I'm standing here with both of you telling me that you don't see
what's right in front of us. She's the key to everything in this case right to
the FBI.
SCULLY: Well, for your sake, I hope so. But I hope not for mine.
(DOGGETT's cell phone rings.)
DOGGETT: John Doggett.
SKINNER: Agent Doggett, I don't want to be making this call. I really don't,
but I'm forced to.
DOGGETT: What are you talking about?
SCENE #11: KERSH'S OFFICE
(DOGGETT bursts into KERSH's office. He's angry.)
DOGGETT: You want to turf me now?! You going to take my badge and gun?
KERSH: Agent Doggett, you just can't burst in here.
DOGGETT: How's it going to look, Deputy Director -- you suspending me right
before I nail you up against the wall as a co-conspirator?
FOLLMER: Glad you dropped in, Mr. Doggett. Assistant Director Follmer.
DOGGETT: You're Brad Follmer?
FOLLMER: I was just explaining to the Deputy Director the reasons why you were
being suspended but I think your actions here speak for themselves.
DOGGETT: I see what this is. This is just a little bureaucratic pimp job.
KERSH: I'd watch your mouth, John.
FOLLMER: What this is, is a testament to your gross insubordination and
reckless disregard for the FBI.
DOGGETT: The orders start here and then they come out your wishy-washy mouth.
FOLLMER: Paranoia must go with the job. You're starting to sound just like Fox
Mulder, Mr. Doggett.
DOGGETT: Don't you "Mr. Doggett" me. I don't answer to you. I answer to A.D.
Skinner.
FOLLMER: The job suspension stands, Mr. Doggett.
DOGGETT: Try and stop me.
(DOGGETT leaves. The door closes behind him.)
SCENE #12: [BASEMENT OFFICE]
(REYES is looking up SHANNON McMAHON's record in the Office Of Human Resources
Employee Database. The Top Screen reveals the following information: (Name)
McMahon, Shannon, ???; (Current Post) Special Investigator, ???; (Birthplace)
Snoquaimie Falls, Washington; (Education) Duke University School of ???.
There's a picture of Shannon McMahon on the left of the screen with the
following below: McMahon, Shannon, C. / Special Investigator, D.O.J. 27172-
7091. There's a brief knock on the office door before TLG walks in.)
FROHIKE: you just never know who's going to come a-knocking, do you?
REYES: How'd you get in here?
LANGLY: Through the front door with a big howdy do.
FROHIKE: How'd you get in?
REYES: Through a security checkpoint.
FROHIKE: Kid stuff.
REYES: What are you doing here? You sent us hacking on this investigation
of yours only we had a small funding fiasco.
LANGLY: They cut our internet service.
REYES: Don't tell me you breached FBI security just to log on.
BYERS: I think you u want to see this.
( REYES walks over to LANGLY's laptop just in time to see an American-flag-
bikini clad poster girl. Langly gasps, embarrassed.)
LANGLY: uh, um, not this.
(More typing )
FROHIKE: Okay, this is what we meant to show you. We are live in the EPA phone
system. The numbers in red are calls to deputy administrator CARL WORMUS after
he drowned.
REYES: Who'd be calling him at work after it's front page news that he's dead?
LANGLY: Someone who doesn't know it.
( Phone ringing )
BYERS: whoever it is, they're calling him again as we speak. Langly! Patch in
a cord.
( Typing )
LANGLY (to FROHIKE): pick up the phone.
FROHIKE: What? C-C-Car-Carl Wormus.
CAPTAIN: I've been trying to reach you. They've ordered us to port. One of my
men is dead. I think they suspect what we're up to.
FROHIKE: Right. What's it you need from us... me on this end?
CAPTAIN: Just like we talked about. You're going to call the FBI.
FROHIKE: Right.
CAPTAIN: You've got to get to the FBI and tell them about the lab they've got
on board ... about the horrors and the inhumanity. Expose these people for what
they are.
(ROHRER is watching the CAPTAIN at the phone booth and listening in on his
conversation. Either the CAPTAIN is whispering really loud, or ROHRER has
super-hearing.)
SCENE #13: [FOLLMER'S OFFICE]
(REYES walks determinedly through the hallway to an outer office door.)
REYES: I need to talk to you.
(FOLLMER is talking with his assistant.)
FOLLMER: I have an appointment.
REYES: Don't do this to me, Brad.
FOLLMER (to his Assistant): Give me two minutes. (FOLLMER and REYES go into
his office.) Here you are again, Monica. Walking through my door.
REYES: I need your help.
FOLLMER: Ah. I tried to help you.
REYES: I'm asking you again.
FOLLMER: Okay. I'm listening.
REYES: There's a woman working at the Department of Justice -- Shannon McMahon.
I need her case files.
FOLLMER: You say that like it's something I can just do. It's not.
REYES: It's important to me.
FOLLMER: Important to you and to Agent Doggett, in other words.
REYES: You're on the wrong side of this fight, Brad. I can show you. Trust
me.
FOLLMER: I had it illustrated by Mr. Doggett himself in the Deputy Director's
office today.
REYES: Would you listen to me? People's lives are in danger here. He's being
set up. We are being set up.
FOLLMER: By whom?
REYES: The Justice Department? It's why I need those files. (FOLLMER is
uncertain.) I'd ask you to just do this for me ... but he's a good man.
FOLLMER: He believes he's in the right.
REYES: And you? You always are?
SCENE #14: [STREET SIDE]
REYES: Where's Shannon McMahon?
DOGGETT: She's back in my house, why? What's this about?
REYES: She's lying to you. She's not who you think.
DOGGETT: Where are you getting this? Everywhere I look. She works for the
Department of Justice. Did you know that? I got a peek at her case files.
Those two men she killed? They'd contacted her at DoJ-- as whistle-blowers.
DOGGETT: She said they conspired with the government. They were part of the
program.
REYES: They were killed because they wanted to expose the program.
DOGGETT: Why is she lying? Why come to me?
REYES: Because there's still one man she can't pinpoint and she wants you to
lead her to him.
DOGGETT: How, when I don't even know who you're talking about?
REYES: He's captain of a navy ship that spends 12 months a year at sea. He had
been in guarded contact with both dead men about a secret lab on that ship.
DOGGETT: Right now, Shannon McMahon's the only sure thing we have. We cut out
on her and go to this ship of yours we risk coming up with both hands empty.
SCULLY: Agent Doggett, if this is true about this ship and about this lab there
may be answers there that I can't risk not knowing.
(REYES enters the back seat of the car.)
SCENE #15: [THE VALOR VICTOR]
(Back to the blue screen on the Valor Victor where we see genetic material being
implanted / removed into / from the ovum. The door buzzes. DR. NORDLINGER goes
to the view screen next to the door.)
NAVY SEAL: Dr. Nordlinger? A message for you, sir.
(DR. NORDLINGER opens the door slowly and sees the NAVY SEAL. THE CAPTAIN comes
up behind the NAVY SEAL and presses his gun at the NAVY SEAL's neck.)
CAPTAIN: I want every hard drive. All the data you've got in this butcher shop
you're running here.
(DR. NORDLINGER doesn't say anything. KNOWLE ROHRER appears behind the
CAPTAIN.)
SCEME #16: [DOCKS OUTSIDE THE VALOR VICTOR]
(The Agents' car stops outside the docks and the agents emerge.)
DOGGETT: Where is this captain supposed to be?
REYES: We're supposed to meet him at a phone booth at 1:00 A.M.
It's ten to.
(There's a figure standing by the phone booth.)
SCULLY: Somebody's already there.
DOGGETT: Is he calling or meeting you?
REYES: I don't know. It wasn't clear.
SCULLY: He sees us.
(The FIGURE by the phone booth sees the three approaching, he turns and
approaches them.)
DOGGETT: Hold up, there! (The Figure keeps approaching.) I said, hold up,
there! (The figure doesn't stop. DOGGETT watches intently as the figure closes
in on them. He reaches for his gun as he realizes who it is.) This ain't no
captain.
SCULLY: Who is it?
(DOGGETT holds out his gun in both hands.)
DOGGETT: Knowle Rohrer. Run. (SCULLY and REYES turn to run.) Now!
(DOGGETT begins firing as ROHRER approaches. He empties his clip into the man
with no affect on him. DOGGETT takes a swing at ROHRER. ROHRER blocks him and
hits him back instead. DOGGETT falls to the ground. ROHRER lifts DOGGETT up
and throws him against the crate clear across the way. ROHRER lifts DOGGETT up
and grabs his head clearly intending to crush DOGGETT. DOGGETT screams in pain.
>From behind ROHRER, his head is chopped off. McMAHON approaches DOGGETT.)
McMAHON: You didn't trust me.
(She helps DOGGETT up. DOGGETT looks at her. A hand appears out from McMAHON's
abdomen. Both ROHRER's decapitated body and McMAHON fall off the docks.
DOGGETT stares speechless as he peers into the waters below.)
SCENE #17: [THE VALOR VICTOR]
(DOGGETT, SCULLY and REYES walk up the plank to the ship, their guns drawn.
SCULLY's holding the flashlight. DOGGETT heads off in a different direction
from REYES and SCULLY.
DOGGETT: You see anybody?
REYES: Nobody.
SCULLY: This can't be right.
REYES: What happened to the captain?
(REYES and SCULLY proceed to check the decks below. Shortly, the encounter a
head on the catwalk with a body lying some feet away.)
SCULLY: I think we found the captain.
(On another part of the ship, DOGGETT finds a bomb set to explode in 2 minutes.
The detonator is armed.)
DOGGETT: They're scuttling the ship. Agent scully... agent reyes!
(DETONATOR ARMED AT: 2:02 ... 2:01 ... )
(SCULLY and REYES find the lab.)
(DETONATOR ARMED AT: 1:59 ... 1:58 ... 1:57 ... 1:56 ... 1:55 ... )
REYES: This must be it.
DOGGETT: Monica! Dana!
(REYES stands by while SCULLY is shocked at what she sees.)
Doggett: Agent Scully! Agent Reyes!
REYES: In here.
DOGGETT: Move out. We got to get out of here.
SCULLY: You see what this is?
DOGGETT: Agent Scully, we got to go! We got to go! Now!
SCULLY: But they're manipulating ova -- females eggs for transplantation.
(DETONATOR ARMED AT: 00:52 ... 00:51 ... 00:50 ... ) Look at these names.
They're test subjects.
DOGGETT: Grab her, Monica. We got less than a minute to get out of here.
SCULLY: Just give me a second.
DOGGETT: We got no time!
SCULLY: No. Let me go. Let me do this, okay? I just... I have to see if I'm
here. My name, my baby's name.
(DETONATOR ARMED AT: 00:34 ... 00:33 ... 00:32 ... )
DOGGETT (reaches up to SCULLY and grabs her attention): You want to see your
baby again? We've got no time, Dana. (Softly) We'll find another way.
(SCULLY gets ahold of her panic and nods at his promise. The three agents hurry
out of the lab and off the ship.)
(DETONATOR ARMED AT: 00:14 ... 00:13 ... 00:12 ... 00:11 ...)
(The Agents make their way out of the corridors of the ship. REYES is in front,
DOGGETT is pulling SCULLY behind him.)
(DETONATOR ARMED AT: 00:06 ... 00:05 ... 00:04 ... 00:03 ...)
(The Agents clear the ship and are running on the docks to safety.)
(DETONATOR ARMED AT: 00:01 ... 00:00 ... )
(The ship's cabin explodes with several follow-up explosions.)
SCENE #18:
WASHINGTON, D.C.
48 HOURS LATER
(Knocking on the office door. DOGGETT walks into KERSH's office. He closes the
door behind him.)
DOGGETT: Deputy Director.
KERSH: My sources tell me you've wrapped up your investigation, John.
DOGGETT: I have my report ready, sir.
KERSH: Yes. How do I come out? (DOGGETT looks down at the folder in his hands
and hands it over to KERSH.) "Super soldiers, a navy ship ... a woman at the
Department of Justice who drowned two men. All disappeared now, but which
constitute a conspiracy like a cancer in the U.S. Government." Not a mention of
my name, John.
DOGGETT: No, sir. I found nothing on you. Nothing damning I could honestly
include in my report, let me say. And because I got nothing to lose let me say
that I know your hands are dirty on this thing, sir-- filthy.
KERSH: That's why you're here. Take a last wild punch before the bell.
DOGGETT: There's one thing I can't figure and then I'll be on my way ... is why
you slipped that obituary under my door.
KERSH: You think I did that?
DOGGETT: Over and over in my mind it had to be you. You're the only one that
had a reason.
KERSH: What's my reason?
DOGGETT: You tell me. You looking just to get me fired or get me killed?
(DOGGETT throws both his holstered weapon and his badge in the middle of KERSH's
desk in front of KERSH. He turns and walks out of the office.
KERSH: You ever hear of King George III?
DOGGETT: You answer my question!
KERSH: He was king of England when America declared independence in 1776. King
George III kept a diary. On July 4, 1776 he made an entry in it: "Nothing
important happened today."
DOGGETT: What the hell does that got to do with me?
KERSH: Revolution started. Things that changed the world forever. And even
kings can miss them if they're not paying attention.
DOGGETT: Are you saying you left that obituary to help me? To help me find the
things that I found? Nah... why would I believe that you'd help me?
KERSH: Agent Mulder believed me.
DOGGETT: Mulder? What the hell are you talking about? Mulder's long gone.
KERSH: Say I told Mulder that he would be killed if he stays ... same people
who threatened to kill me if I didn't go along. Would you believe that, John?
DOGGETT: No. Mulder wouldn't hear it, not from you, not from anybody.
KERSH: I said I told him to go. I didn't say I persueded him.
(DOGGETT realizes what happened.)
DOGGETT: Oh, my god. It was Scully. Scully made him go. That's it, isn't it?
SCENE #19: [ELEVATOR:]
(DOGGETT walks down the hallway toward the elevator with a thoughtful look on
his face. He puts his FBI Badge on his jacket where it should be. The elevator
door opens. FOLLMER is there.)
FOLLMER: Going to the basement? Heard you got a stay of execution.
Congratulations.
DOGGETT: I'm sure you mean that.
FOLLMER: No, I'm sure the Deputy Director has you just where he wants you.
Don't get me wrong, I'm a friend to the x-files. Kind of a comfort having you
down there Mr. Doggett.
(Elevator dings. The doors open. FOLLMER exits. REYES enters.)
FOLLMER: Hi.
REYES: Hi.
DOGGETT: Just so long as you know here to reach us ... Mr. Follmer.
SCENE #20: [UNDERWATER UNKNOWN]
(Marine mammal sounds. McMAHON is on the bottom of the ocean. Her eyes open.)
SCENE #21: [SCULLY'S APARTMENT]
(SCULLY gasps and wakes up. WILLIAM is cooing in the bassinet next to her. She
checks in on WILLIAM, then goes back to sleep on the couch.)
SCULLY (whispering): Everything's going to be okay. Go back to sleep, okay?
Yeah, there you go.
(Metallic squeaking sounds.)
