History of The Eye of Gruumsh (by Jeffrey Bowers, A.K.A. Damein Rahl)
All know the titanic battle fought between Gruumsh, God of the devious Orcish hoards, and Corellon Larethian, God of Elvish peoples. None remember what may have provoked that fateful confrontation, but the fact is evident that it did. Both Gods, appearing in the Ethereal planes as giant (and in Gruumsh's case, monstrous) versions of their peoples. They carried their favouredweapons and armours, and both showed great affinity with said artifacts. The ground shook with their blows, and lightning and thunder rained from their weapons. It seemed a very fair match, with Gruumsh possessing the greater physical strength and Corellon having the greater agility.
Finally, Gruumsh scored a powerful blow with the butt of his spear, and Corellon went down on his back. Instead of pressing his advantage, however, he began to gloat over the fallen God. This proved to be his error. Right when Gruumsh was about impale the Elf God, Corellon lunged upward too fast for the Orsish God to counter and sent the tip of his sword through Gruumsh's left eye. The other God howled in agony as a bolt of other worldly lightning launched from his eye in all directions, sending Corellon flying backward. He jerked the sword out as he fell, with the eye on the end. The force of his fall, however, sent the eye hurtling into the air. The eye was hit by a lightning bolt, and was crystallized.
The eye fell from the Ethereal plane onto the Prime Material plane, where it was found by a very powerful wizard. Thinking the thing merely some slightly enchanted stone, he worked it into a gold necklace and enchanted it further. Only when all was done did he realize what he'd done. Fearing retribution by the Gods, but not wanting to openly admit what he had done, he gave it to a tribe of Barbarians, and so it was lost for hundreds of years.
