Hi Ortega. Didn't know it was your b.day. Hope you've had lot's of fine food and drink.
As you know, the Brit horror forum has been down for a few days. Thing's were looking bleak (house) for a bit, but I got this from Darrell tonight (let me have an e-mail address and I'll keep you posted if you like):
"Hi everyone
Once again, apologies if I've missed anyone off the
mailing list. I've been e-mailing several of you over
the past couple of days, but some of you won't have
heard from me until tonight - if so, it's either because
I was aware that you'd been in touch with Chris
personally about the state of the board, or because I
put the mailing list together in such haste that I will
have unfortunately omitted a few of you. Sorry, it
wasn't intentional - I just wanted to get news out to
as many folk as possible as quickly as possible.
If you know anyone on the board who has not
received stuff from me, feel free to pass this on to
them, or let me have their e-mail contact details so
I can add 'em to the list.
Anyway, down to business. I've just spoken to
Silas, who may be able to offer an alternative to
the British Horror Films forum we know and love.
Silas owns, but doesn't use, the domain
'BritishHorrorForum.co.uk', and is prepared to
bring this out of storage and open it as a proper
forum. He's looking into all of the technical aspects
at present (I don't know much about this side of
things, but the technical specifications seem large
enough to accommodate all of our board traffic)
and will get back to me with more info as soon as
he can. Silas says that setting all of this up will cost
#300 (a lump sum), for two years - I know there
are several of you willing to chip in financially if needs
be, and have told Silas that the cash burden will not
rest entirely on his shoulders.
However, I've also just received this from the man
himself, Chris Wood:
"Hi Darrell,
I've had some great e-mails from a variety of people
(yourself included, obviously).
Hopefully, in the cold light of day, it should be a
sortable problem and we should be able to avoid the
money issue. Just looking around at other providers, it
appears I may have been being ripped off for the last
couple of years. I should be able to find a provider who
offers about 10gbbandwidth a month, we'll just have to
see.
My providers are proving just how shit they can be, to
be honest - after the initial snotty reply to my questions,
I've heard nothing. Which considering I'm paying THEM
cash for this, seems like pretty bad service.
My only issue is the moving of the board from one
provider to another - it's an old, out-of-date bit of software,
and I haven't got the original set-up files. The cost might
come in buying a new version of the board and then linking the
current SQL databases to it (I may sound like I know what I'm
talking about here, but I really don't!). After all, there's no point
starting from scratch here - I need to be sure I can rescue all
the posts, members IDs etc and transfer them over. I have a
techie friend who said he might be able to help, but I may yet
prevail on the kind offers from Iain, Marc etc.
I'd imagine from their lack of replies to my questions that I'm
going to have to wait until December 1st (when I get more
bandwidth) before I'll be allowed to do anything to the site.
At least then I'll be able to update the front page to inform
people of what is going on, and make sure that I've
downloaded all the databases and stuff from the site.
TTFN,
C."
Encouraging news, I'm sure you'll all agree.
That's it for now. I'll send out another bulletin when I
hear from Silas.
The board (as we know it) may not be back...but
*something* will..."
