New Licensing Agreements

The WallStreetJournal reports that "Luxottica Group SpA ...[will] make eyewear for Coach Inc. (COH) and that the deal should produce sales of more than $100 million a year for the U.S. brand." Coach-labeled eyewear will be sold at Coach stores, department stores,  travel retail outlets, independent stores, and Luxottica's retail chains.

In another deal, HMX Group signed "a worldwide licensing agreement with Signature Eyewear for its Hickey Freeman, Bobby Jones and Monarchy brands. Signature currently holds the license for Hart Shaffner Marx eyewear," according to WWD.

Cutler & Gross New Sunwear Line

WWD reports that "Cutler and Gross, which also produces lines for the likes of Giles Deacon, Victoria Beckham and Maison Martin Margiela, has co-produced a capsule sunglass line with Cacharel. The line, which is based on one style in four different color ways (watermelon, lemon, nude and pink), will be distributed in select stores from January."

Abbott has received US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) market clearance for RevitaLens Ocutec, a multi-purpose disinfecting solution for silicone hydrogel and conventional soft contact lenses. Abbott Medical Optics senior vice president Jim Mazzo, senior vice president of Abbott Medical Optics, said the solution with its rub and rinse regimen, establishes a new standard of disinfecting technology for contact lens wearers.

Complete Line of 3D Prescription Lenses

Luxottica will launch in late 2010 the world's first range of glasses for watching 3D films with prescription lenses. Oakley, the Luxottica brand that will launch the next line, reportedly has maintained visual clarity anded extended the peripheral viewing angle, resulting in a better alignment of 3D images. Luxottica has tested its initial idea at DreamWorks workshops.

Maybach Line Launches Soon

In a few weeks, Maybach Eyewear will launch with eight models of sunglasses in up to nine colors and 10 spectacle frames in up to six colours. The choice will include lightweight, rimless models, metal-rim frames and natural horn-rim frames.

As the DallasNews noted recently, "The Vuzix Wrap 310XL is one of those gadgets you either love or you can't see the point of. It's a wearable video monitor." Don't we get enough video in this country without putting it an inch from our eyes? Guess not.

3D Eyewear in the News

ThomasNet reports that Microtips Technology is capable of producing 3D active shutter lenses for $3-4. Lens specs are available at the site.

"Starting January, Marchon3D will offer a wide range of sunglasses that incorporate the circular polarizing technology used in 3-D movie theaters that feature the RealD system," says a blog in the New York Times The story continues: "The company will sell its less-expensive line in movie theaters for about $35. ...[T]he glasses can be worn anywhere and will block 100 percent of UVA and UVB light, [but] they will not block bright light."

[T]he company will also offer photochromic 3-D glasses under the M3D name, at prices ranging from $99 to $12, which will be sold at optical shops.

A few weeks ago, Polaroid Eyewear announced a collection of Real ID 3D glasses that "will feature a wide range of "appealing designs," in addition to (finally!) a prescription lens option," according to TGDaily.

The HomeTheater section from About.com reports that XpanD has introduced  "Universal 3D Glasses that can work on most currently available 3D TVs that use the Active Shutter system." For more details, check out...XpanD Universal 3D Glasses product page."

"Oakley has signed a sponsorship and licensing agreement with the U.S. Olysmpic Committee that will allow it to outfit members of Team USA with its eyewear during Olympic competition. Terms of the multiyear agreement were not available, but sources said it offers the USOC both cash and value-in-kind," reports SportsBusinessJournal.

VisionMonday reports today that "this season Nouveau Eyewear has unveiled six new models in their Kay Unger signature eyewear collection....Though the line’s trademark details based upon the sophisticated fabrics and luxurious tailoring of the designer’s apparel collection are still evident, the eyewear line has taken on a more casual feel."

The website is also noting that "Viva International Group has launched the Gant Rugger Eyewear Collection for men age 20 to 40. ...the eyewear collection...consists of 12 optical styles featuring a mix of modern and vintage styling."

Bausch & Lomb Launches Biotrue CL Solution

The NYTimes.com reported this morning: "Biotrue professes to mimic nature by using hyaluronan, a substance similar to tears first developed for ocular surgery. It has a pH level of 7.5, which the brand describes as the center of the range for healthy tears. Hyaluronan is not in any other lens solutions in the United States, the company says." It also reportedly has a biodegradable box and bottle, which isn't as green as it may seem. The article also goes into the impact or lack of impact of the ReNu recall in 2006.

AOA Gives UV Acceptance Rating to 1-Day Acuvue
According to a press release, " 1•Day Acuvue Trueye brand contact lenses today became the fifth contact lens in the Acuvue line to receive the Seal of Acceptance for Ultraviolet Absorbing Contact Lenses from the American Optometric Association's (AOA) Commission on Ophthalmic Standards."
