Calculate Your Kids Chances for Cataracts
Topic: Eye Care

It's a lousy proposition. But it can be done. According to a post on OptometryToday, "Transitions Optical has launched a new online tool which predicts the probability of a child developing cataracts later in life. The Children’s Cataract Calculator aims to help practitioners educate parents about the importance of children’s eye health." That's not so lousy. You can find the calculator in the Children's Corner of the Transitions Store on its United Kingdom website.

Life Sucks in Sweden for Opticians--and Editors
Topic: Optical--Sort Of
"Psychologists, physiotherapists, dentist and specialist fire fighters are not likely to have to worry about getting a job in the future, according to the trade union Saco's prognosis. Other professions that will be in high demand by 2015, says the report, are social workers and chiropractors. Librarians, opticians, editors at publishing houses and museum workers are on the other hand more likely to face unemployment, according to the white collar union Saco." That was a recent post on Radio Sweden.

The Longer the Replacement Interval, the More CL Patients Complain
Topic: Contact Lenses
Thirteen percent of patients wearing monthly replacement contact lenses returned to their eye doctor with comfort or vision complaints or required a lens refit compared to eight percent of patients wearing a two-week modality over the study period, according to a press release from the American Academy of Optometry. This translates to 62 percent more of these unscheduled doctors' visits for monthly wearers versus two-week wearers.  Visits requiring medical treatment were recorded separately and were not different between the two groups.

Prediction: CL Sales to Rise
Topic: Contact Lenses

"The volume of contact lens sales across the planet is set to return to normal in the near future after being impacted slightly by the economic downturn, one source has predicted," according to a post on ContactLenses.co.uk. "Michael Pecora, chief executive of Unilens Vision, said that the organisation's operating results for the first quarter of the fiscal year 2011 show that sales were impacted slightly."

One U.S. retailer is pushing to  help fulfill Pecora's prediction. " JCPenney Optical announced today that they will be holding their Biggest Contact Lens Sale of the year from Monday, November 15 through Tuesday, November 30, 2010."

Meanwhile VisionMonday reported that "VSP Vision Care and Bausch + Lomb launched a consumer contact lens program to provide additional rebates to VSP members, which began on Nov. 1." That can't hurt sales.

You and an Angelfish Seeing Eye to Eye
Topic: Optical
A week ago MedicalNewsToday reported about a new vision discovery. "To a hungry fish on the prowl, the split-second neural processing required to see, track, and gobble up a darting flash of prey is a matter of survival. To scientists, it's a window into how our brain coordinates the eye motions that enable us to hit a baseball, sidestep an errant skateboarder, and otherwise make our way in a world full of danger and opportunity. This process is now better understood, thanks to a team of scientists that imaged the activity of individual neurons in a part of a zebrafish's brain called the optic tectum. The optic tectum receives signals from the retina, filters them, then sends the signals to other parts of the brain that control motion. "

Girl Blinded in 10 Weeks
Topic: Eye Care

"Schoolgirl Becky Cranmer has baffled doctors after she went blind in just 10 weeks," according to a post on TamesideAdvertiser. (Another version of the story was posted on the website for the DailyMail.) "Six months ago Becky, 11, was looking forward to the summer break before starting at Denton Community College. But during a family holiday in June, her eyesight started to fail – and 10 weeks later she was blind. Becky’s mum took her to an optician, who told them to go to hospital. She spent the next six weeks having tests at the Royal Oldham Hospital and the Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital before doctors diagnosed optic neuritis, the inflammation of the optic nerve." Then her story worsens.
