All night Alexis drifted in and out of sleep, thanks in part to the pain medication. Each time she opened her eyes he was there, smiling down at her. She remembered telling him he should get some sleep but was unsure if he had followed her advice. In the morning she awoke to find him still sitting in the chair by her bed, apparently wide awake.
"Don't you ever sleep?" She asked groggily, lifting her hand to brush the hair from her eyes. The movement stopped when she the IV line entered her line of vision and with it the reality of her situation.
"How are you feeling?" he asked, moving the hair for her and taking her hand in his, gently bringing it away from her sight.
"I still can't remember anything." She told him and saw the disappointment in his eyes before he masked it.
"Hey, are you hungry? Tony said you could have breakfast if you felt up to it."
"Actually I am." She admitted, enough so that even hospital food would be appreciated.
"Great," he said reaching for the phone on her bedside table. He dialled a number quickly and waited for an answer. "Hi, yes, we're ready you can bring it up now." He instructed.
"Wow, I didn't think hospitals delivered meals on demand."
Instead of answering he smiled and helped her sit up. By the time she was ready there was a knock at the door.
"Come in," Jax called and in walked an elegantly dressed waiter, pushing a tray of covered dishes. Placing the tray beside the bed he nodded to Jax before taking his leave.
Alexis couldn't believe her eyes as Jax removed the lids one by one. There were pancakes with three kinds of syrup, muffins, a bowl of fruit and three tall glasses. One of the glasses held milk, another orange juice, the third contained a dark pink thick substance that she couldn't identify. Seeing her confusion over the third glass Jax smiled.
"It's a protein shake," he told her. "You love them."
Alexis slowly picked up the glass and took a sip of the mystery substance. Apparently whoever she had been was without taste buds. Quickly swallowing the awful liquid she proceeded to drink down the entire glass of orange juice. If was only when she finished that she noticed Jax was trying not to laugh.
"You tricked me." She accused not really angry.
"I thought you could use the extra nutrition," he told her looking not the least apologetic.
Alexis decided to ignore him for the rest of her meal instead focussing her attention on the amazing food that had been placed before her. Obviously this was not hospital food, unless this was an amazing hospital. How was it she wondered that she could remember that hospital food is toxic and yet not remember her own name? When she finished eating she decided she had punished Jax enough, besides she had some questions for him.
"Jax, you said yesterday that I had a daughter, where is she?"
"She's in the nursery."
"I want to see her." Alexis told him trying to move her legs to the floor and causing much pain in the process.
"Hey." Jax readjusted her in the bed so that she was more comfortable and so that he was blocking her escape.
"You can't keep her from me Jax, I need to see her."
"I wouldn't dream of stopping you Alexis the thing is it will be easier for me to bring her to you since you're not allowed out of bed yet." He explained calmly.
"Oh," she said feeling foolish.
"I'll be right back," he told her bending down to kiss her forehead before walking out of the room.
It seemed like only seconds later her door opened and a young man with dark hair stepped into the room.
"You're awake," he grinned coming farther into the room.
"Yes," she agreed not knowing what else to say. Obviously the young man knew who she was and he seemed delighted by the fact that she was awake. The problem was how do you tell someone "I'm sorry, you seem to know me but I have no idea who you are." There just wasn't an easy way to approach the subject. And so Alexis resigned herself to answering his questions as best she could and waiting for the right moment to tell him she had no knowledge of his identity.
"When did you wake up?"
"Last night."
"Where is Jax?"
"He went to get Kristina."
"He's been here the whole time you were in the coma Alexis, I don't think he ever left your side, except to check on Kristina. I gotta say you two have an interesting relationship."
"Really how so?" Okay so she was fishing for information, but anyone who had been privy to his smile could not blame her for wanting to know more. After all, she reasoned, he seemed to know her pretty well, it was only fair that she find out a bit more about him.
"Well, most people are barely on speaking terms after they get divorced but you two are like best friends. You're always there for each other, you never fight, makes me wonder why you guys got divorced in the first place."
Alexis sat there in silence thinking about what the young man had said. She and Jax had been married, why hadn't he told her?
PBefore she could think about it any further Jax entered the room holding Kristina.
"Zander."
"Hi Jax, I was just catching up on Alexis but I need to run. See you later," he told Alexis as he left.
"Bye."
She would have to ask Jax about this Zander later, but right now she was only interested in one person. Jax gently placed the baby in her arms and Alexis held her daughter for the first time. The first thing she noticed was her hair, it was dark brown and already curly, Alexis smiled. Next she counted her daughters fingers, then her toes.
"They're all there," Jax assured her smiling.
"She's so beautiful Jax." She whispered tears streaming down her cheeks. In spite of her loss of memory she was sure she had never felt more whole than at this moment.
"Hi there Kristina, I'm your Mommy."
Kristina responded by grabbing her mothers finger and looking up at her with a serious exprision.
Alexis smiled at this and murmured, "My solemn little one, she looks so wise."
"Just like her mother." Jax agreed.
Is she like me? Alexis wondered, first to herself and then aloud,
"I look at my daughter and I see how amazing she is but I don't know the ways in which she's like me because I don't know me." The last words were almost a sob, clearly the stress of the situation was starting to catch up with her.
"Well, luckily for you I am an expert in all things Alexis, ask me anything you want to know." Jax offered hoping that he could calm her by giving her some answers.
"Okay, what do I do, I mean do I work?"
"You're the district attorney." He told her proudly.
"I'm a lawyer? Am I good?"
"The best." He told her in the same tone he had heard her use so often.
"Do I have any family, I mean besides Kristina?" She asked glancing down at her precious baby, almost asleep in her arms.
Jax thought an instant before answering, he didn't want to lay the whole Cassadine thing on her yet, nor did he want to explain about Kristina.
"You have a brother that lives in Milan," he told her, "and a nephew here in Port Charles."
And an ex-husband she thought to herself. For some reason Jax had chosen to keep that to himself. It made her wonder what else he wasn't telling her and made clear her next question.
"Alexis what is it?"
"Nothing, I just...um...I was... I have no idea how to ask this question."
"Alexis you can ask me anything." He assured her gently, hoping he was wrong about the question he knew she would ask, he wasn't.
"Who is Kristina's father?"
