When Alexis woke up the on the morning of January 1, 2002 the first thing she was aware of was a raging headache, the next was a very male, very naked body in bed with her. Raising her head slightly so as not to awaken him she found herself staring into the face of her best friend, her former husband Jasper Jax.
Several hours earlier…
It had been a horrible New Years Alexis thought as she stood at the door of her penthouse just after midnight. After promising her a night of fun Sonny had once again put her on hold to take care of something more important. Alexis understood family obligations better than anyone but it still hurt that he didn’t even seem sorry that the night had ended so early. Then again why should he? Alexis thought, she was only a friend whom he had taken out as a distraction, nothing more. Well now Sonny was back at his place getting his sister settled in, leaving her, once again, alone. She should have just stayed home. Alexis opened the door and nearly screamed when she realized someone was in her apartment. Instead she quickly flicked on the lights and was immensely relieved to see that it was Jax sitting on her couch.
“What on earth are you doing sitting in my penthouse in the dark? And how did you get in here the door was locked, wasn’t it?” Now that she was no longer afraid she was mad as hell at him for scaring her in the first place.
“It was locked,” Jax replied “but I needed to see you.”
“So you broke in? Couldn’t you have waited until I got home?”
“I didn’t know when you would be getting back from your date and waiting inside seemed the more comfortable option.”
Alexis noticed the anger in his voice for the first time. She also noticed the half empty bottle of champagne on the table.
“How was your date?” Jax asked before she could question him about the alcohol.
“Terrible” she replied coming to sit beside him on the couch. She knew he was angry with her, though she didn’t know why, but she didn’t care. She was happy he was there, she didn’t want to be alone anymore. She noticed there were two glasses on the table, one was obviously his but the other was empty.
“Were you expecting someone?” She asked.
“No, just hoping,” was his reply as he filled the glass for her.
She drank it without question and then allowed him to refill her glass. Before long the bottle was empty, Jax went to the kitchen and came back a minute later with a second bottle. Alexis wondered vaguely where it had come from but before she could ask he was once again refilling her glass. Raising his own he proposed a toast,
“To the new year, and all it will bring.” With their next refill they toasted to forgetting past mistakes, with the next, their friendship.
The last thing either of them would remember doing that night was clinking their glasses after Jax’s final toast, to not being alone anymore.
Alexis began to panic and was soon having difficulty breathing, just stay calm she reminded herself, Stay calm and don’t make any sudden moves…don’t make any sudden moves? He wasn’t a bear, she quickly reminded herself. Still moving would undoubtedly cause him to wake up and that was the last thing she wanted right now. Little did she know…
Jax had been awake for about twenty minutes just savoring the feeling of having Alexis in his arms. He still wasn’t sure exactly how she came to be in his arms but what was that old saying about not looking a gift horse in the mouth. She was beautiful when she slept, of course she was beautiful when she was awake he reminded himself. Still there was a peace about her when she slept as though she hadn’t a care in the world, he could never remember seeing her look more beautiful than at this moment. Alexis began to stir and at first she snuggled closer to Jax and he knew he had gone to heaven. Then it happened. Jax knew the exact moment Alexis became fully awake, she stiffened completely. Jax wanted more than anything to pull her back into his embrace but he knew she was probably still confused. And so he had closed his eyes and pretended to be asleep to give her a few more minutes to face the reality of the situation. Now he decided he had waited long enough…
“Good morning Alexis.”
“Jax… I… that is… you…. What on earth happened last night?”
He should have known she wouldn’t just accept what happened.
“We made love” he replied smiling at her as though it were the most natural thing in the world.
“That much is clear” Alexis mumbled still not able to look him in the eyes. “What I mean is… never mind.” Alexis was going to ask why it had happened but in truth she wasn’t sure what she wanted him to say. If he told her it had only happened because they were drunk she wasn’t sure what she would do. Wait a minute what was she thinking? Of course it had only happened because they were drinking, Jax was her best friend. He was also a wonderful man, and extremely sexy, she thought looking down at his bare chest… No! What had gotten into her she wondered imagining how horrified Jax would be if he knew what she was thinking. He was probably trying to figure a way out of this without making her feel bad. Was there a nice way to say I’m sorry we had sex but can we still be friends? If there was, she was determined that she would be the first one to say it. First things first there was no way she could have a serious conversation with him when he was lying naked in her bed.
"I think we should get dressed." Alexis stated trying to get out of bed while wrapping the sheet around her body.
Jax laughed a little when he realized what she was trying to do and she immediatly glared at him.
"You could turn around she stated pointedly.
Realizing that Alexis was upset he reluctantly did as she asked and faced the wall so she could grab her robe.
"Alright you can turn around now He did and was once again awed.
"You look beautiful in the morning" he said.
"You’ve seen me in the mornings before, when we were married," she reminded him.
"Yes but back then I hadn’t just spent the night making love to you."
Feeling incredibly uncomfortable Alexis decided it would be best to get this over with quickly, like a band-aid, pull it off and be done.
“Jax” “Alexis” they both spoke at once. Apparently he had the same idea.
“You go first Jax invited wanting to find out what she was thinking before he started making any confessions of his own.”
“This was a mistake.” Alexis began wanting to let him off the hook as quickly as possible. “Obviously we both had too much to drink and well behaved… behaved in an inappropriate manner,” she continued unknowingly hurting him as much as she was hurting herself. “We are friends and I just hope that we still can be after, well, after what’s happened.”
Jax looked at Alexis, she appeared to be very certain that she wanted nothing more than friendship from him. Obviously last night had been nothing more than a rather embarrassing incident that she wanted to forget. For a moment he was tempted to take her into his arms and prove to her that what they had was real and wonderful but then he thought better of it. She had already made her feelings quite clear and he wasn’t about to risk losing her from his life altogether. “If that’s the way you feel,” he replied quietly.
“It is,” she stated with far more confidence than she felt. “I’m going to have a shower.”
“Yeah I guess I should get dressed.” Jax stated uncomfortably.
“Okay I’ll se you later then.” With that Alexis disappeared into the bathroom and Jax was left to wonder how he could feel to full and so empty at the same time.
For the next couple months Jax and Alexis saw very little of each other which was completely Alexis’ fault. She had been strategically avoiding him since their night together. It was not only their night together that was making her uncomfortable but also the dreams she had been having about him since that night. It was not as though she hadn’t noticed he was attractive before but suddenly she was finding herself unable to concentrate when she was with him, her mind drifting off into places she’d rather it didn’t go.
"Alexis are you ready to go for breakfast?" Kristina asked bounding into Alexis'bedroom.
"Not this morning. I’ll be lucky if I can make it to work," she replied lifting her head slightly off the pillow then putting it back when she was hit with a wave of nausea.
"You’re sick again?" Kristina asked with growing concern.
"This is the third time this week, I think you should go see a doctor."
"No!"
Alexis’ reply was too insistent and emmediatly Kristina knew something was wrong.
"Alexis," she said "Why don’t you want to see a doctor?"
Knowing that she would have to confide in someone Alexis reluctantly replied, "because I think I’m pregnant."
